- KonferenzbeitragAdvanced Reduction Rules for the Verification of EPC Business Process Models(SIGSAND-EUROPE 2008: Proceedings of the Third AIS SIGSAND European Symposium on Analysis, Design, Use and Societal Impact of Information Systems, 2008) Mendling, Jan; Aalst, Wil van derConceptual business process models such as Event-driven Process Chains (EPCs) play an important role in the business process management life cycle. The pro- blem in this context is that most of today’s commercial business process management tools provide only limited support for quality assurance beyond simple syntax checks. In this paper we focus on verification of behavioral correctness as one of the major qua- lity issues for process models. To be more concise, we introduce advanced reduction rules for EPCs in order to address the requirements of performance and identificati- on of errors in practice. We present the verification tool xoEPC that implements the reduction rules. It provides detailed feedback to the modeler where errors are located in the model, and generates a report on quality issues in a process model collection. We present the application of xoEPC to the analysis of the SAP reference model to illustrate the tool.
- KonferenzbeitragThe Impact of Activity Labeling Styles on Process Model Quality(SIGSAND-EUROPE 2008: Proceedings of the Third AIS SIGSAND European Symposium on Analysis, Design, Use and Societal Impact of Information Systems, 2008) Mendling, Jan; Reijers, HajoQuality issues and their connection with structural aspects of process models have been recently studied, but there is still a notable lack of research into quality aspects of activity labels in business process models. In this paper, we investigate whether the guideline to use verb-object labels actually contributes to improved model quality in terms of less ambiguity and higher usefulness. In an explorative analysis of the activity labels in the SAP Reference Model we identify three labeling styles that differ in the degree of ambiguity they bring about. Based on these styles we design a survey to test the hypothetical connection between labeling style and quality. The results suggest that indeed the verb-object style is superior to other ways of constructing labels. Our findings are deemed to be useful for modeling practice.

Due to the complexity of events to be modelled, a high interaction level between users and developers is required. The lack of appropriate approaches for modelling complex events with the common conceptual modelling languages hampers this interaction. Here an approach for modelling complex events in business processes using event diagrams and event-driven process chains is proposed.
- TextdokumentMulti-level Modelling with the FMMLx and the XModelerML(Modellierung 2020, 2020) Clark, Tony; Frank, UlrichMultilevel modelling is a new modelling paradigm that enables additional abstraction through an unlimited number of classification levels and thus contributes to reuse, integration and flexibility. The XModeler is a language engineering tool that allows for the common representation of (meta) models and code. The multi-level modelling and execution language FMMLx is implemented in the XModeler by extending its genuine meta model. This tutorial provides a comprehensive introduction into the foundations of multi-level modelling and its application. It will be shown how multi-level modelling enables relaxing fundamental conflicts of system design. During a practical exercise with the XModelerML, the participants will experience a new style of modelling that integrates language design with traditional ways of modelling.

However, continuous changes such as technological innovations constitute novel challenges for the development and the offering of PSS. As these challenges become more and more diverse and complex, single companies, especially SME, are often not able to handle this level of complexity and involve further multidisciplinary expertise in PSS design. While prior research mostly focuses on a tighter integration of the product and service domain, there is a lack of integrated approaches that consider even further disciplines like software, mechanical or electrical engineering. Accordingly, this study aims to explore how conceptual models such as process models can be applied as a basis for combining various domains to contribute to the development of new PSS. Therefore, we specified corresponding problems and challenges that motivate our work and report first results of our research project.

This covers a wide range of issues such as how to combine learned and manually engineered models, data-driven modelling support, automatic incremental model adaptation, and how to achieve the explainability of learned models e.g. by utilizing conceptual models as background knowledge.
