- KonferenzbeitragEvolution of Disaster Spatial Risk Assessments: a Bibliometric Analysis(EnviroInfo 2022, 2022) Wong, Ingrid; Greve, Klaus; Szarzynski, JörgThe advancements and availability of geospatial technology and data, combined with a growing understanding of the importance of disaster management and disaster risk reduction, lead to an increase in quantity and quality of publications in spatial disaster risk assessments. This paper presents an overview of an in-depth bibliometric study of the global evolution of such spatial disaster risk assessments from 2000 to 2021. The study revealed an upwards trend in scientific production, with hydrological hazards dominating the research field. However, climate change may further drive research for meteorological and climatological hazards. No direct influence was found between major disasters and the number of assessments. The study also shed light on the conceptual frameworks that guided spatial risk assessments, with hazard and vulnerability being the essential components.

This paper describes a prototypical safety-critical environment and discusses the HCI (human computer interaction) challenges of different interactive systems for safety-critical environments. We designed, developed and evaluated various interactive systems which solve different challenges in so-called mass casualty incidents (MCIs). In summary, we made contributions to three different areas of application: Mobile computing in safety-critical environments, simulation of safety-critical environments and social media in safety-critical environments. Finally, this paper gives further insights how all these research results can to be brought together in the future in order to be able to build usable interactive systems for safety-critical environments.

A Case Study on Reachability of Remote Areas for Emergency Management(i-com: Vol. 16, No. 3, 2017) Tost, Jordi; Heidmann, FrankWhen a hazard event strikes, the reachability of affected areas is a significant factor that can determine if the situation becomes a disaster. Decision makers have to react quickly while under stress to tasks that depend on the road network, such as management of relief operations, planning of evacuation routes, or food and first aid distribution. In this paper we present an approach for exploring and validating reachability of remote areas through visualization with an interactive tabletop and tablets. We propose a simple way to combine and visualize data from scientists and communities to provide insights into area reachability, as well as the likely impacts of future hazard events on access routes. Moreover, our interface introduces an approach to assess alternative accessibility options to isolated settlements by helicopter or off-road routes that builds on satellite data and interactive collaborative mapping. This set of visualization and interaction techniques facilitates the formation of risk scenarios for better planning, preparedness and response activities. We developed our research with a case study of landslide threat for an area in Colombia.
