- KonferenzbeitragAttention Guidance in Second Screen Applications(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Lohmüller, Valentin; Eiermann, Philip; Zeitlhöfler, Peter; Wolff, ChristianThe use of a secondary device alongside a first screen, such as a television, is referred to as second screening and is generally considered as a common and widespread behavior. With the advent of smart first screens (smart TVs, set-top boxes, streaming sticks, etc.), this type of activity gained a new perspective in the form of connected second screen applications such as YouTube, Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video which enable functionalities such as the dis-play of additional information or remote control aspects on the second screen. The design of these distributed applications is difficult because the user´s attention cannot be focused on both parts at the same time, which is why this paper presents two eye-tracking studies investigating this problem. The studies examined on the one hand the general viewing behavior with second screen applications and on the other hand the targeted directing of attention to the first and second screens. From these results, recommendations for the design of second screen applications are derived and presented, with the aim that the two application parts complement each other rather than competing for the user's attention.
- ZeitschriftenartikelGuidelines for Education in Business and Information Systems Engineering at Tertiary Institutions(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 59, No. 3, 2017) Jung, Reinhard; Lehrer, ChristianeThe paper presents guidelines for education in business and information systems engineering (BISE) at tertiary institutions, which were designed by a working group comprising domain experts, both from academia and practice. The guidelines contain the learning outcomes in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, in particular, the key subject-specific, social, and personal skills needed by BISE graduates. Moreover, corresponding occupational profiles, the specific skills required, as well as the essential and typical learning content for BISE education are described. Furthermore, detailed recommendations for the design of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees curricula and sub-curricula in BISE, business administration, and computer science, respectively, are provided. The presented guidelines serve several purposes. Providing common directions for BISE education is aiming to support personnel in charge of curriculum development and to assist students in program and career choice.
- KonferenzbeitragModularization Guidelines to Support Control Software Variability in IEC 61499(SE 2024 - Companion, 2024) Sharma, Shubham; Hager, Anna-Lena; Zoitl, AloisIn the field of Cyber-Physical Production System (CPPS), a substantial number of control software components are integrated with legacy software. This legacy control software has existed in industries for decades and faces maintenance problems due to sub-optimal tool support. Consequently, rigid software structures have emerged, making maintenance difficult and necessitating better support for managing variability. These legacy systems contain an enormous volume of control software, making it impractical to transform manually in terms of variability management. Additionally, there is a growing demand for variability to accommodate to customer-specific requirements. Control software must be flexible and modular enough to fulfill diverse project-specific needs. Guidelines are required to assist control system engineers in determining which control software components must be refactored and which can be left unchanged. We investigated legacy control software from industrial use cases, identified problem areas, and gathered lessons learned. These lessons have been translated into guidelines for future control software modularization. Hence, in this paper, we present a set of guidelines aimed at modularizing IEC 61499 control software, specifically focusing on enhancing control software variability for variability-intensive CPPS.
The growing relevance of digital support services for teaching and learning, e.g., in schools and universities, has led to an increase in the importance of Conversational Agents in educational contexts. So-called Learning Companions offer the potential of user-adaptive learning support that is flexible in terms of location and time. Since the application of such novel future technologies is accompanied by a strong sense of ethical responsibility, this paper discusses opportunities and challenges posed by the use of Learning Companions from an ethical perspective. Based on a qualitative study with six experts and the discussion of the findings with existing literature, this article presents seven practical recommendations for the design of virtual learning companions from an ethical perspective and addresses, among other aspects, the handling of ethical guidelines, active user involvement, and educational equity.
