- KonferenzbeitragBest Practices for Designing Electronic Healthcare Devices and Services for the Elderly(i-com: Vol. 15, No. 1, 2016) Wille, Matthias; Theis, Sabine; Rasche, Peter; Bröhl, Christina; Schlick, Christopher; Mertens, AlexanderDemographic change and associated shifts in the age structure lead to major challenges in health processes. One way to address this is to increase the use of telemedicine systems and services to ensure non-local yet individualized patient care, such as in rural areas. When considering new medical technology components, we must compensate for age-related changes in perception, cognition and motor skills to achieve user-centered design and take into account psychophysical effect relationships to achieve sustainable acceptance for technology integration. This paper presents various best-practice examples for participatory investigation into influencing factors, with a focus on the different times and periods within the lifecycle of a telemedical product and associated services. In addition to giving concrete design hints derived from individual studies, the paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the paradigms used and provides recommendations for user-centric development with old and very old patients.
- KonferenzbeitragDesign guidelines for micro information radiators to increase seniors' safety in urban space(Mensch und Computer 2020 - Tagungsband, 2020) Stojko, Laura; Fietkau, Julian; Koch, MichaelSenior citizens face challenges during activities in urban space. To help and motivate them pursuing outside activities, we propose a network of micro information radiators to increase their feeling of safety. In this paper we first collect guidelines and relevant aspects for the design of micro information radiators. Then we summarize our own experiences from a project designing smart urban objects – particularly giving an overview of design guidelines for input and output interaction of micro information radiators.
- ReportDesigning Smart Urban Objects - Adaptation, Multi-user Usage, Walk-up-and-use and Joy of Use(2021) Koch, Michael; Fietkau, Julian; Stojko, Laura; Buck, AnnaDesigning human-computer interaction for non-personal computing devices in urban space poses different challenges than designing for personal devices. In this paper we summarize the findings from a project developing smart urban objects to help elderly people participate in urban life. We present four key challenges that have been identified designing such objects, and present first ideas for how to address these challenges. The four key challenges are adaptability (and data privacy), multi-user usage, walk-up-and-use and joy of use.
- KonferenzbeitragDevelopment of the InteractionSuitcase in virtual reality to support inter- and transcultural learning processes in English as Foreign Language education(DELFI 2021, 2021) Hein, Rebecca; Steinbock, Jeanine; Eisenmann, Maria; Latoschik, Marc Erich; Wienrich, CarolinImmersion programs and the experiences they offer learners are irreplaceable. In times of Covid-19, social VR applications can offer enormous potential for the acquisition of inter- and transcultural competencies (ITC). Virtual objects (VO) could initiate communication and reflection processes between learners with different cultural backgrounds and therefore offer an exciting approach. Accordingly, we address the following research questions: (1) What is a sound way to collect objects for the InteractionSuitcase to promote ITC acquisition by means of Social VR? (2) For which aspects do students use the objects when developing an ITC learning scenario? (3) Which VO are considered particularly supportive to initiate and facilitate ITC learning? To answer these research questions, the virtual InteractionSuitcase will be designed and implemented. This paper presents the empirical preliminary work and interim results of the development and evaluation of the InteractionSuitcase, its usage, and the significance of this project for Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) and English as Foreign Language (EFL) research.
- ZeitschriftenartikelDigital Probes Kit(i-com: Vol. 17, No. 2, 2018) Koch, Daniel; Maaß, Susanne(Cultural) probes have been used in various software design projects and HCI contexts over the last years. With the ubiquity of smartphones today, there are new ways to design probes material as digital probes. Smartphones allow to document everyday life in situ in mobile contexts and provide a permanent channel for communication between researchers and participants. Based on an analysis of strengths and weaknesses of traditional probes, we propose a concept for a Digital Probes Kit in the form of a digital diary and describe its potential.

- WorkshopbeitragEffects to be taken into account in the research of (semi-) public displays(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Workshopband, 2019) Camurtay, Buket; Koch, MichaelPsychological effects can influence the active as well as the passive usage behavior of users of (semi-)public displays, and thus can lead to inaccurate results in evaluations. In this paper, we aim to gather the current knowledge about known and relevant effects in the deployment and operation of (semi-)public screens, so that they can be taken into account when designing or evaluating (semi-)public display applications. Additionally, we collect possible approaches to deal with these effects. The objective of this paper is to support the HCI community in understanding and planning the impact of the enumerated effects in future work.
