A deep understanding of potential customers and their problems is required before deciding which features or capabilities to develop. In order to gain a better understanding of the problems it is helpful to engage with potential customers, ask them about their pains and listen closely to what they say. Lean and agile product management approaches provide techniques for exploring problems, revealing the underlying problem-related assumptions, and validating problems. Until now, these methods have been mainly used in Business-to-Consumer (B2C) domains. There is a lack of reported experience and knowledge about challenges when applying problem exploration and validation techniques in the Business-to-Business (B2B) domain. This article presents a case study about a product development effort in a large IT company offering software-intensive products and services in the B2B domain. The objective of the study is to identify the B2B-specific challenges with respect to problem exploration and validation. Results from the case study show that the huge number of various problems and their variations in B2B contexts, partially caused by different company environments, makes it difficult to identify the most relevant problems and to align them with a suitable customer segment. By utilizing an approach that iterates problem exploration and problem validation, it is possible to create a ranked problem list that can support customer segmentation and guide the product development.
- TextdokumentLean Experiments: Die Rolle von Interaction Design und UX Research im Lean Startup Ansatz(Tagungsband UP13, 2013) Mahlke, Sascha; Giere, Lars; Hörstkamp, Silvia Kleine; Hoos, Sebastion; Cepkenli, SirinProduktentwicklungsprozesse haben sich in den letzten Jahren insbesondere im Software- und Web-Bereich stark verändert. Die Konzepte Agile Development und Lean Startup spielten dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Ansätze und Methoden aus dem Bereich der Nutzerzentrierten Gestaltung müssen für diese neuen Kontexte angepasst werden und dadurch verändert sich auch die Rolle von Interaction Designern und User Experience Researchern. Wir beschreiben in diesem Beitrag anhand eines Beispiels, welche Herausforderungen und welche neuen Anforderungen sich für den Bereich User Experience dadurch ergeben können. Mit einem Lean Startup Ansatz sollte innerhalb kürzester Zeit eine mobile Applikation für Fahrzeughändler konzipiert werden. Um Nutzeranforderungen und den Nutzungskontext ideal berücksichtigen zu können, wurde dafür ein temporärerer Projektstandort in der Nähe der Nutzer gewählt. Durch ein interdisziplinäres Team wurden in enger Kooperation mit den Nutzern und in kürzester Zeit Produktideen entwickelt. Aus den Ergebnissen lassen sich diverse Hinweise auf Best Practices zum Team Setup, den eingesetzten Methoden und zum Projektablauf ableiten.
- KonferenzbeitragThe RIGHT Model for Continuous Experimentation(Software Engineering 2017, 2017) Münch, Jürgen; Fagerholm, Fabian; Guinea, Alejandro Sanchez; Mäenpää, HannaDue to rapidly changing technologies and business contexts, many products and services are developed under high uncertainties. It is often impossible to predict customer behaviors and outcomes upfront. Therefore, product and service developers must continuously find out what customers want, requiring a more experimental mode of management and appropriate support for continuously conducting experiments. We have analytically derived an initial model for continuous experimentation from prior work and matched it against empirical case study findings from two startup companies. We examined the preconditions for setting up an experimentation system for continuous customer experiments. The resulting RIGHT model for Continuous Experimentation (Rapid Itera- tive value creation Gained through High-frequency Testing) illustrates the building blocks required for such a system and the necessary infrastructure. The major findings are that a suitable experi- mentation system requires the ability to design, manage, and conduct experiments, create so-called minimum viable products or features, link experiment results with a product roadmap, and manage a flexible business strategy. The main challenges are proper, rapid design of experiments, advanced instrumentation of software to collect, analyse, and store relevant data, and integration of experiment results in the product development cycle, software development process, and business strategy.
