- Konferenzbeitrag20 Years of Software-Reengineering – A Résumé(Software archeology and the handbook of software architecture, 2008) Sneed, Harry M.This paper is an attempt to define what software reengineering is and what it has accomplished in the light of 20 years of practical application. The paper points out that reengineering is one of the many software maintenance activities, i.e. everything done with software once it has been put to use. Reengineering actions are devoted to improving the technical quality of existing software. By accepting this definition, it is possible to distinguish reengineering from other related activities performed on a software product after its first release such as reverse engineering, redocumentation, evolution and migration.
With the increasing power of mobile computers and display devices, the use of augmented reality technologies has increased over the past decade. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that allows users to interact with their physical environment by superimposing digital information. This technology highlights certain features of the physical world, improves understanding of those features, and provides intelligent and accessible insights. AR technologies impact industries such as manufacturing, medicine, research, education, and entertainment. This article focuses on AR applications in manufacturing, primarily in the domains of assembly, repair, diagnosis, and training. It also presents the effectiveness and efficiency of AR technologies in this area based on four of these applications.
- KonferenzbeitragAugmented Reality Experiences for the Operator 4.0(Mensch und Computer 2020 - Usability Professionals, 2020) Hariharan, Anuja; Maharudrappa, Bindu; Felic, ArturVirtual manufacturing has resurfaced and become the time of the hour - when entire production industries had to halt due to an unprecedented pandemic. This situation raises questions such as - Is a complete "virtual manufacturing" process even possible? How can an Operator stay well- and super-informed in such environments and make timely decisions? How can he collaborate effectively in virtual reality? Mixed Reality offers the opportunity to provide real-time information in an inobtrusive way, promising travel and cost-savings. An Operator wearing a set of smart glasses or holding a tablet receives individualized and real-time information about production order and status. His augmented experience motivates him to absorb information, and reduces his need to be physically present. Real-time sensor data make his information accurate. Digital twins enrich his visual experience, rendering him/her with a deeper understanding of the production processes. Maintenance instructions on augmented reality (AR) make his life easy, while performing expensive repair procedures. Collaborative tools in virtual reality enrich his possibilities to teleport and work with other co-creators. With practical demonstrations and use cases, we present proof-of-concepts of systems conceived for the Operator 4.0, with demonstrations and evaluations.
- KonferenzbeitragAugmented Reality Guidance for Car Repairs: immediate and long-term Effects(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Tagungsband, 2021) Hoffmann, Clemens; Prilla, Michael; Wundram, Kai; Emmermann, BjörnCar service technicians are challenged by the increasing variety and complexity of repair and maintenance tasks. Recent studies have shown benefits by using augmented reality (AR) for different industrial tasks. Most studies compared a very established support technology with the new AR support in just one initial exposure. The lack of routine in dealing with AR often creates a respective disadvantage. This paper looks into the question to which extent can AR head-mounted display (AR HMD) guidance provide benefits for an unknown car repair task. To investigate further than an initial exposure, the service technicians repeated the specific task every twoweeks in total four times. The experiment under field conditions compares the efficiency, the repair quality, and the mental effort under AR HMD support to the traditional repair guideline. Results indicated that AR HMD support impacts positive the repair quality immediately and long term. Furthermore, the AR HMD support created a decent learning environment, that the high quality also remained without AR guidance. This shows opportunities to use AR HMDs for training and guidance of industrial tasks in practice.
- ZeitschriftenartikelMaintenance of Enterprise Architecture Models(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 63, No. 2, 2021) Silva, Nuno; Sousa, Pedro; Mira da Silva, MiguelEnterprise architecture (EA) models are tools of analysis, communication, and support towards enterprise transformation. These models need a suitable maintenance process to support comprehensive knowledge of the enterprise’s structure and dynamics. This study aims to identify and discuss the existing approaches to EA model maintenance published in the scientific literature. A systematic literature review was employed as the research method. A keyword-based search in six databases identified a total of 4495 papers in which 31 primary studies were included. A total of nine categories of EA model maintenance approaches were identified from both information systems and enterprise engineering fields of research. The increasing amount of research in EA model maintenance suggests that the topic still presents opportunities for research contributions. This study also proposes future lines of research according to the results identified in the theoretical corpus.
The fourth industrial revolution is quickening the digital transformation of shop floors, enabling immense potential for optimization. Maintenance is an important area that can profit decisively from making digital information serviceable. It serves to guarantee a smooth production process. Currently, unexpected problems still lead to high opportunity costs. Effectively addressing them is hampered by a lack of transparency, which makes it difficult for service staff to detect, localize, and identify faults. Innovative data analysis methods, which allow to intelligently evaluate and use machine condition data, promise a remedy. In the future, these will support maintenance issues and optimize the overall process. However, the condition of current shop floors in German medium-sized manufacturing companies appears inadequate. As a survey conducted by us revealed, machinery data still comes mainly from light sensors, motor voltages, and positioning scanners. Such binary data values complicate data analysis of modern evaluation methods. The paper at hand addresses this problem without a need for shop floor extensions. Together with partners from industry, a step-by-step development approach was developed to show how comprehensive maintenance support is possible despite restrictions on binary data values. The implementation is based on techniques from the areas of process mining and machine learning. A demonstrator evaluates the practical suitability.
