AbstractThe german-speaking IS community sees itself as a methodological pluralist discipline. With respect to recent debates (e.g. on rigor versus relevance) an exact knowledge of its methodological profile becomes increasingly important. This contribution presents the findings of a content analysis of 300 articles published in the journal WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK in the last ten years. As one result, the study identified six major methods of the german-speaking IS community: argumentative, conceptional and formal deductive research, prototyping, case studies and quantitative cross sectional studies. It could also be shown, that the methodological profile continually changed during the last ten years. The article also compares its findings with the current methodological profile of the anglo-american IS community based on a secondary data analysis.
- KonferenzbeitragItem Familiarity as a Possible Confounding Factor in User-Centric Recommender Systems Evaluation(i-com: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2015) Jannach, Dietmar; Lerche, Lukas; Jugovac, MichaelUser studies play an important role in academic research in the field of recommender systems as they allow us to assess quality factors other than the predictive accuracy of the underlying algorithms. User satisfaction is one such factor that is often evaluated in laboratory settings and in many experimental designs one task of the participants is to assess the suitability of the system-generated recommendations. The effort required by the user to make such an assessment can, however, depend on the user’s familiarity with the presented items and directly impact on the reported user satisfaction. In this paper, we report the results of a preliminary recommender systems user study using Mechanical Turk, which indicates that item familiarity is strongly correlated with overall satisfaction.

Summary In many applications of Computer Science specifications and implementations of process models are designed requiring detailed knowledges of basic modelling procedures. In this paper the authors develop a specific meta-terminology on a high level of abstraction by using the background of various disciplines. Different model types and their particular applications (simulation and visualization) are outlined. Some illustrative examples are used to explain the basic methods.
Summary The following contribution is a plea for more stringent methodological standards in software technology. Certain basic scientific principles are often neglected, principles such as the fact that predictions need to be falsifiable. This appears to confirm the theses of the so-called „constructivists“ that „objective truths“ are in reality simply social constructs. It is thus argued here that one needs a stronger empirical foundation for software technology.
- WorkshopbeitragReferential Practices for a Museum Guide Robot. Human-Robot-Interaction as a Methodological Tool to Investigate Multimodal Interaction(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Workshopband, 2019) Pitsch, KarolaAn autonomous robot system was equipped with basic means to monitor the users’ success/failure in following a robot’s verbal-gestural deictic reference to an object and – in case of problems – to provide additional help, i.e. to suggest a ‘repair’ action. A real-world field trial with the robot acting as museum guide constitutes the basis for analysis of the users’ reactions. This example is used to explore HRI as a tool to investigate multimodal interaction.

AbstractGregor and Jones have proposed components for design theories, building on theory concepts from behavioural sciences and prior publications. Their design theory structure addresses IT artefacts in general, not specific to any type, such as constructs, models, methods or instantiations. Their work is an important contribution to the academic discussion of design theories. The authors are building on this and believe that specialised design theory structures for different types of artefacts further increases utility, usability and acceptance of the components for both academia and practice. They have analysed each of the components published by Gregor and Jones and proposed refinements specific to method design artefacts wherever applicable. For each component, they derive evaluation criteria and present examples of method publications fulfilling the criteria. They argue that by presenting method design theories according to this structure the contribution of method design artefacts to the body of knowledge will increase.
