- ZeitschriftenartikeliManual(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 47, No. 1, 2005) Klann, Markus; Humberg, Daniel; Wulf, VolkerThis article describes the iManual-concept developed at Fraunhofer FIT which deals with the use of mobile devices as context-aware integrated control and help systems for in principal arbitrary wirelessly connected consumer or industrial products. Following the premise of designing the interface of various IT-based products in a way that facilitates learning and respects user expectations, we explore the design space that is created by combining control and help functions by way of mobile devices. On the way, we discuss various potentials of this approach to enhance the corresponding products and services. Based on a review of the state of the art on intelligent help systems and mobile interfaces we describe the iManual concept and a prototypical implementation for a PDA-based control and help system for the navigation system of the BMW 7. We conclude with a discussion of limitations and opportunities for extension of the approach and corresponding further work.

Eigene Mobilgeräte der Nutzer wie Smartphones sowie Public Displays bieten für Läden neue Möglichkeiten, das Einkaufserlebnis auch im stationären Handel mit personalisierten Angeboten digital und medial zu unterstützen. Die Individualisierung erfordert dabei passende persönliche Daten der Nutzer, die sowohl akquiriert als auch geschützt werden müssen. Zudem sind ein Mehrwert und eine hohe Nutzungsrate nur durch einfache und direkt zu erfassende Benutzungsschnittstellen möglich, die für interaktive Systeme – wie Public Displays – und integrierte Nutzung von mehreren Geräten – wie Smartphone und stationäres Touch-Display – in Ladengeschäften erst entwickelt werden müssen.Mit einer Befragung werden Aspekte des Datenschutzes für persönliche Daten und Anforderungen aus der Situation im Ladengeschäft erhoben. Ein Konzept und Prototyp für die Nutzung von persönlichen Mobilgeräten und Public Displays zeigt neue Interaktionsmöglichkeiten bei Kontrolle von sensiblen Informationen für eine digitale und interaktive Customer Experience. Beispielsweise kann die Integration von Mobilgeräten mit interaktiven Displays oder die Erkennung von Kleidungsstücken gestisch eingesetzt werden, d. h. indem Mobilgeräte oder Kleidungsstücke an das Display gehalten, aufgelegt oder anderweitig per Geste in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Eine qualitative Studie zeigt Nutzerfeedback und Praxistauglichkeit sowie Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten für zukünftige Systeme.AbstractWhile in online shopping Customer Experience is further optimized e. g. by recommender systems, new digital and interactive approaches for stores are still in their infancy. Stores experience challenges when keeping pace with online shops. In this competitive environment, mobile devices and Public Displays yield new possibilities for them to improve the customer experience in retail stores by using personalized offers that are supported digital and medially. Here, individualization require specific personal data of the users, which must be acquired from the users and also has to be protected. Additionally, added value and a high usage rate can only be achieved, if easy-to-use and intuitive user interfaces are made available. These new user interfaces still have to be developed for interactive systems – like public displays – and integrated usage of multiple devices – like smartphones with stationary touch displays – to be made available to customers in retail stores.We have conducted a survey regarding aspects of privacy for personal data of customers and requirements that arise from the situation of the customer in the store. A concept and prototype for the use of personal mobile devices and Public Displays for digital and interactive Customer Experience then shows new possibilities for interaction while keeping the user in control of sensitive information. For example, it is possible to integrate mobile devices and interactive displays or to use articles of clothing for gestures and recognize them. This means for example that users can touch the display with their mobile devices or textiles and with that gesture create a relation between the thing and the device triggering adaptations on the Public Display and system. A qualitative user study using the prototype provides user feedback and shows suitability for practice as well as challenges and new possibilities of future systems.

- KonferenzbeitragNatural 3D Interaction Techniques for Locomotion with Modular Robots(Mensch und Computer 2015 – Proceedings, 2015) Krupke, Dennis; Lubos, Paul; Bruder, Gerd; Zhang, Jianwei; Steinicke, FrankDefining 3D movements of modular robots is a challenging task, which is usually addressed with computationally expensive algorithms that aim to create self-propelling locomotion. So far only few user interfaces exist which allow a user to naturally interact with a modular robot in real-time. In this paper we present two approaches for baseline research of 3D user interfaces for intuitive manipulation of 3D movements of a modular chain-like robot in the scope of an iterative design process. We present a comparative evaluation of the techniques, which shows that they can provide intuitive human-robot interaction via remote control for real-time guidance of modular robots to move through heavy terrains and pass obstacles. In particular, our results show that steering a robot’s locomotion via rotational hand movements has benefits for challenging locomotion tasks compared to translational hand movements. We discuss the results and present lessons learned for steering user interfaces for modular robots.
- DissertationRisks and potentials of graphical and gesture-based authentication for touchscreen mobile devices: balancing usability and security through user-centered analysis and design(2016) Zezschwitz, Emanuel vonWhile a few years ago, mobile phones were mainly used for making phone calls and texting short messages, the functionality of mobile devices has massively grown. We are surfing the web, sending emails and we are checking our bank accounts on the go. As a consequence, these internet-enabled devices store a lot of potentially sensitive data and require enhanced protection. We argue that authentication often represents the only countermeasure to protect mobile devices from unwanted access. Knowledge-based concepts (e.g., PIN) are the most used authentication schemes on mobile devices. They serve as the main protection barrier for many users and represent the fallback solution whenever alternative mechanisms fail (e.g., fingerprint recognition). This thesis focuses on the risks and potentials of gesture-based authentication concepts that particularly exploit the touch feature of mobile devices. The contribution of our work is threefold. Firstly, the problem space of mobile authentication is explored. Secondly, the design space is systematically evaluated utilizing interactive prototypes. Finally, we provide generalized insights into the impact of specific design factors and present recommendations for the design and the evaluation of graphical gesture-based authentication mechanisms. The problem space exploration is based on four research projects that reveal important real-world issues of gesture-based authentication on mobile devices. The first part focuses on authentication behavior in the wild and shows that the mobile context makes great demands on the usability of authentication concepts. The second part explores usability features of established concepts and indicates that gesture-based approaches have several benefits in the mobile context. The third part focuses on observability and presents a prediction model for the vulnerability of a given grid-based gesture. Finally, the fourth part investigates the predictability of user-selected gesture-based secrets. The design space exploration is based on a design-oriented research approach and presents several practical solutions to existing real-world problems. The novel authentication mechanisms are implemented into working prototypes and evaluated in the lab and the field. In the first part, we discuss smudge attacks and present alternative authentication concepts that are significantly more secure against such attacks. The second part focuses on observation attacks. We illustrate how relative touch gestures can support eyes-free authentication and how they can be utilized to make traditional PIN-entry secure against observation attacks. The third part addresses the problem of predictable gesture choice and presents two concepts which nudge users to select a more diverse set of gestures. Finally, the results of the basic research and the design-oriented applied research are combined to discuss the interconnection of design space and problem space. We contribute by outlining crucial requirements for mobile authentication mechanisms and present empirically proven objectives for future designs. In addition, we illustrate a systematic goal-oriented development process and provide recommendations for the evaluation of authentication on mobile devices.

While tag clouds have been popular in the World Wide Web for many years, a systematic adaptation of their properties to the requirements of small devices has yet not been addressed. With our work, we apply tag clouds to access conference proceedings on a mobile device. In a user-centered design process we derived design guidelines and evaluated a working prototype. Our results reveal that mobile tag clouds work well with a maximum of 25 tags per cloud, that they can be segmented into sub tag clouds, and that users prefer the selection of multiple tags to refine the result list of articles.
