Digital services are already the centerpiece of the Internet economy and are based on the principles of interaction, collaboration, and the consideration of individual values. Exploiting the potential of digital services in practice areas such as nursing, education, and child care, has become even more of a priority as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. To bring out innovations in these areas of personal services, collaboration between science and practice is essential. But participation in common forms of cooperation, such as networks, technology clusters or projects, is increasingly characterized by decentralization. Support services are needed to achieve common goals in cooperation across organizations and locations. This contribution is dedicated to the challenges and potentials of digital research services for decentralized research and innovation. In this context, it becomes clear that the three principles mentioned at the beginning are not only relevant for the Internet economy.
- KonferenzbeitragGRANITE – EJEA: Europe meets Japan: Intercultural Workshop on Data Sovereignty and Generative AI. Applications, Design, Social, Ethical, and Technological Impact(INFORMATIK 2024, 2024) Reiners, René; Ganter-Richter, SabineThe workshop's primary goal is to bring together experts from academia and industry to discuss and develop new collaborative efforts with regard to the topics data sovereignty and generative AI. It serves as a platform to exchange knowledge, identify common challenges, and explore innovative solutions for Europe and Japan. The workshop is commonly organized by the GRANITE Network and the European-Japanese Experts Association (EJEA). GRANITE focuses on fostering global cooperation by creating a network of ambassadors in various fields of science and technology, whereas EJEA is dedicated to enhancing cooperation between Europe and Japan through various activities, including conferences, workshops, and research projects. On the European side, Fraunhofer FIT and the Network for Science play pivotal roles in driving the initiatives for both, GRANITE and EJEA. From Japan, the prefectures of Nagano and Kagawa are instrumental in facilitating the collaboration.
- KonferenzbeitragModel-Based Software Engineering at RWTH Aachen University(40 Years EMISA 2019, 2020) Adam, Kai; Michael, Judith; Netz, Lukas; Rumpe, Bernhard; Varga, SimonIn this article, the Software Engineering Research Group of RWTH Aachen University presents its research aim, research topics and some research highlights that have been researched over the last ten years. Furthermore, the relevance of agile, generative and model-based software engineering methods for the special interest group Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures (SIG-EMISA) is discussed.
- ZeitschriftenartikelPotentials of Virtual Reality as an Instrument for Research and Education(i-com: Vol. 18, No. 1, 2019) Zender, Raphael; Knoth, Alexander H.; Fischer, Martin H.; Lucke, UlrikeVirtual Reality (VR) is currently on everyone’s lips for various purposes. Although the hype is currently nearing its productive plateau, there are still uncertainties about the utilization and potential of the technology in research and educational contexts. Together with the two following articles on the subject of VR research, this article provides an overview of the inherent potential as well as remaining challenges in the use of VR as an instrument for research and education. These will be clarified and critically examined on the basis of specific academic projects. Based on this, the article concludes with a comprehensive look on the need for further discussion of ethical issues as the key for VR success in research and education.

This is followed by a discussion on the relevance for the EMISA special interest group.
- KonferenzbeitragResearch, the GDPR, and Mega Biometric Training Datasets: Opening the Pandora Box(BIOSIG 2022, 2022) Catherine JasserandThis paper sheds light on the challenges that the EU data protection rules pose to the constitution and the use of large-scale biometric datasets for research purposes. The paper analyses the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) rules applicable to research and explains their inadequacy for the constitution of large biometric datasets developed to train and test biometric recognition models. Researchers need a considerable amount of data to train and test their models. These data cannot be realistically obtained with the consent of individuals to whom the data relate. But can researchers collect them from publicly available sources, such as social media or open platforms, to create large biometric datasets? Under the current GDPR rules, it seems rather difficult for researchers located in the EU to do so. A thorough analysis of the provisions will explain the challenges that researchers face. In that context, one could have hoped that the Data Governance Act (DGA) would have brought some opportunities for research when it aimed at promoting data altruism. But it seems that the DGA is a missed opportunity to open up personal data for research purposes. As acknowledged by some companies, these regulatory impediments might force researchers to train their models outside the EU with datasets not subject to the EU data protection rules.
- WorkshopWorkshop on Generative Artificial Intelligence in Interactive Systems: Experiences from the Community(Mensch und Computer 2024 - Workshopband, 2024) Zakreuskaya, Anastasiya; Münch, Tobias; Detjen, Henrik; Mayer, Sven; Elagroudy, Passant; Pfleging, Bastian; Draxler, Fiona; Weyers, Benjamin; Gruenefeld, Uwe; Auda, Jonas; Titov, Waldemar; Mackay, Wendy E.; Buschek, Daniel; Kosch, ThomasGenerative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is establishing itself in academia and industry through accessible implementations like ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion. Subsequently, GenAI is changing the interaction paradigms between users and computers. Currently, many individual approaches exist to leverage these tools, creating various strategies and agendas for using them in HCI research. Thus, we expect this will change how researchers design and create interactive interfaces. This workshop facilitates a common understanding of GenAI concerning HCI in which participants will share and discuss their experiences using GenAI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in HCI research. In this workshop, the potential of GenAI for Human-Computer Interaction will be explored and discussed with the research community through position papers, research statements, and opinions, thereby creating comprehensive practical insights synthesizing collective experience and strategies with real-world examples.
