Crises require flexible action and quick adjustments from both people and public institutions. The public sector and especially the German health authorities are massively challenged by the Covid-19 pandemic, starting in March 2020. The management of the partially exponentially growing process volumes due to short-term infection (superspreading) events must be carried out professionally in the shortest time possible and is subject to permanent reaction and adaptation to changing conditions. Existing structures and inefficient processes make this necessary scaling of processing increasingly difficult. In this article, approaches for an accelerated and flexible development of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions for the automation of existing administrative processes within an affected health authority in Germany are investigated by means of action research. As a result, approaches for a faster and less complex development of RPA solutions in a very fast scaling and at the same time heterogeneous IT system landscape were elaborated and evaluated.
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a technology that allows the easy development of computer programs (i.e., bots) which automate computerized business processes through the usage of Graphical User Interfaces. Current publications show that successful RPA implementations especially require a realistic management of stakeholder expectations and an in-depth process analysis. These results underline the need for decision support models to estimate impact of RPA on business processes, and, as such, prioritize business processes for RPA implementation. In this article we present results of an iterative Design Science Research project. The project was conducted in the context of a medium-sized industrial company. The overall aim is to create and evaluate a new scoring model for the prioritization of business processes for automation. The created model offers systematic support in evaluating different processes, ranks these processes with regards to monetary, technological and process-oriented criteria and, thus, allows a prioritization of processes.
- ZeitschriftenartikelRobotic Process Mining: Vision and Challenges(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 63, No. 3, 2021) Leno, Volodymyr; Polyvyanyy, Artem; Dumas, Marlon; La Rosa, Marcello; Maggi, Fabrizio MariaRobotic process automation (RPA) is an emerging technology that allows organizations automating repetitive clerical tasks by executing scripts that encode sequences of fine-grained interactions with Web and desktop applications. Examples of clerical tasks include opening a file, selecting a field in a Web form or a cell in a spreadsheet, and copy-pasting data across fields or cells. Given that RPA canÿautomate a wide range of routines, thisÿraises the question of which routines should be automated in the first place. This paper presents a vision towards a family of techniques, termed robotic process mining (RPM), aimed at filling this gap. The core idea of RPM is that repetitive routines amenable for automation can be discovered from logs of interactions between workers and Web and desktop applications, also known as user interactions (UI) logs. The paper defines a set of basic concepts underpinning RPM and presents a pipeline of processing steps that would allow an RPM tool to generate RPA scripts from UI logs. The paper also discusses research challenges to realize the envisioned pipeline. (**encoding or data invalid**)
In our private and working life, we are surrounded by technologies and interact with them on a daily basis. The smartphone is our constant companion, helpful digital household aids such as vacuum robots are present in every household and most of us have already tried to communicate with chatbots. The industry is also increasingly using technology to build large objects such as vehicles using robots. Thus, industrial and service robots are becoming more and more important. Robotics is an extremely broad topic. Therefore, this contribution introduces the term robotics from the perspective of information systems, deals with the different types of robots and describes the robotic process automation, which is used especially in information systems. This article closes with a discussion about the potentials of robotics.
In the context of digitalization, the increasing automation of manual process steps is an aspect that will have massive effects on future working environments. In particular, the use of software robots for process automation induces high expectations. With regard to implementation, the discussion is currently coined by Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and chatbots. Both approaches pursue the common goal of a 1:1 automation of human actions and thus intend a direct replacement of employees by machines. With RPA, processes are learned and executed automatically by software robots. Thereby, RPA solutions emulate the input on the existing presentation layer. Hence, no changes to existing application systems are necessary. Various RPA solutions are already offered in the market as software products.Chatbots are used to organize the input and output of application systems via natural language, which makes it possible to automate the process of external communication (e.g., with customers) but also within the company (e.g., for assistance functions). This contribution identifies the effects of software robots on work environments on the basis of application examples and discusses the company-individual decision about the use of software robots on the basis of effectiveness and efficiency goals.
