- WorkshopbeitragCare: A chatbot for dementia care(Mensch und Computer 2022 - Workshopband, 2022) Müller, Claudia; Paluch, Richard; Hasanat, ABM AliIn recent decades various digital artifacts have been integrated into our daily life. One such integration is chatbots or conversational agents like Siri and Alexa. Even though those devices are helping primarily in daily activities, they can potentially be used for medical and health care purposes. In our research, we tried to focus on the current trend of using conversational agents in daily life and potential ways of using those in the medical field. Primarily we focused on chatbot uses in dementia care. Within our work, we analyzed interviews from care facilities and referred to some other research articles to find potential ways of using chatbots in care facilities. As a prototype, we developed a chatbot that will act as a communication medium between caregivers and dementia patients. We also conducted an interview to explore further improvement areas of the chatbot.
- KonferenzbeitragDeliberations on the Role of Product Vision in User Experience Design: Outcomes of an Open Focus Group(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Usability Professionals, 2021) Winter, DominiqueCreating a product vision is a common technique in the development of interactive products. Product vision is intended to serve as a point of orientation for design decisions around the product. However, the focus of product vision is often on functional or economic aspects, while the intended user experience (UX) is usually not described; this raises the question of what role product vision has in practice in the development of the UX. At the Barcamp of the German association for usability and UX professionals (GermanUPA), which took place at the conference ‘Mensch und Computer 2021’, a focus group of 27 user experience UX professionals reflected on the influence of product vision on user experience design. The aspects of influence mentioned were documented and summarised to serve as a starting point for future research. Among other points, it emerged that the integration of user experience into product vision and the use of visions within an organisation are relevant for research on the influence of product vision on UX design; additionally, the way UX professionals are involved in vision development and the vision’s use for design decisions are also important.
- WorkshopbeitragDesigning for Technology Transparency – Transparency Cues and User Experience(Usability Professionals 23, 2023) Hein, Ilka; Diefenbach, Sarah; Ullrich, DanielAs technologies become more complex, the question of how transparent they should be for users and how transparency cues should be designed comes to the fore. Transparency refers to the extent to which users learn, for example, how the technology works or arrives at certain results. The increased interest in this topic also stems from legal changes such as the debate about a European AI regulation, which demands transparent AI systems and thus necessitates solutions for an optimal design of transparency cues. The paper discusses examples and risks of lacking transparency and approaches and the state of knowledge for improving the user experience by technology-based transparency cues. Finally, we present an outlook on the promising directions for design guidelines and next steps of research.
- TextdokumentExit Violence: Comparing Usability of Physical and Visual Alarm Buttons in SOS App in the Context of Domestic Violence(Mensch und Computer 2023 - Workshopband, 2023) Sarkar, Nabanita; Marra, Konstantina; Osipova, MargaritaThis study investigated the effectiveness of SOS apps in supporting domestic violence victims, specifically examining the activation process through visual user interface (UI) and physical UI. Using a roleplay method and interviews, participant preferences and behaviours were assessed. Participants used an Android phone with an SOS app, activating it through either visual UI or physical UI. While participants displayed similar behaviours and visually focused on the screen for both methods, a strong preference for the physical UI was observed. Despite no significant behavioural differences, participants expressed higher satisfaction and perceived efficacy with the physical UI.
- KonferenzbeitragModeling User Interaction at the Convergence of Filtering Mechanisms, Recommender Algorithms and Advisory Components(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Tagungsband, 2021) Kleemann, Timm; Wagner, Magdalena; Loepp, Benedikt; Ziegler, JürgenA variety of methods is used nowadays to reduce the complexity of product search on e-commerce platforms, allowing users, for example, to specify exactly the features a product should have, but also, just to follow the recommendations automatically generated by the system. While such decision aids are popular with system providers, research to date has mostly focused on individual methods rather than their combination. To close this gap, we propose to support users in choosing the right method for the current situation. As a first step, we report in this paper a user study with a fictitious online shop in which users were able to flexibly use filter mechanisms, rely on recommendations, or follow the guidance of a dialog-based product advisor. We show that from the analysis of the interaction behavior, a model can be derived that allows predicting which of these decision aids is most useful depending on the user’s situation, and how this is affected by demographics and personality.
- WorkshopbeitragOn the Convergence of Intelligent Decision Aids(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Workshopband, 2021) Loepp, BenediktOn the one hand, users’ decisionmaking in today’sweb is supported in numerous ways, with mechanisms ranging from manual search over automated recommendation to intelligent advisors. The focus on algorithmic accuracy, however, is questioned more and more. On the other hand, although the boundaries between the mechanisms are blurred increasingly, research on user-related aspects is still conducted separately in each area. In this position paper, we present a research agenda for providing a more holistic solution, in which users are supported with the right decision aid at the right time depending on personal characteristics and situational needs.
- KonferenzbeitragPerforming Human-Centered Design Process Assessments(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Usability Professionals, 2021) Heimgärtner, RüdigerProcess assessment is a disciplined project-oriented evaluation of an organizational unit’s processes with respect to a process assessment model. In this paper, an approach is presented of how to assess human centered design (HCD) processes. In detail, the standard approach according to ISO 9241-210 and the HCD processes according to ISO 9241-220 are considered. The HCD process assessment model (PAM) is intended for use when performing conformational assessments of the process capability on the development of interactive systems. It was developed in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 33020. HCD has its own process reference model (PRM), which was developed based on the HCD processes defined in ISO 9241-220. The HCD-PAM contains a set of indicators to be considered when interpreting the content of the HCD-PRM. These indicators may also be used when implementing a process improvement program subsequent to an assessment within an organization. The structure and the content of the HCD-PAM is explained, and it is exemplified by a practical example of assessing base practice 6 of the process HCP.3.4.2. Finally, it is indicated, how an assessment of HCD processes should be prepared, executed, and followed up.
