- ZeitschriftenartikelImmersive analytics: An overview(it - Information Technology: Vol. 64, No. 4-5, 2022) Klein, Karsten; Sedlmair, Michael; Schreiber, FalkImmersive Analytics is concerned with the systematic examination of the benefits and challenges of using immersive environments for data analysis, and the development of corresponding designs that improve the quality and efficiency of the analysis process. While immersive technologies are now broadly available, practical solutions haven’t received broad acceptance in real-world applications outside of several core areas, and proper guidelines on the design of such solutions are still under development. Both fundamental research and applications bring together topics and questions from several fields, and open a wide range of directions regarding underlying theory, evidence from user studies, and practical solutions tailored towards the requirements of application areas. We give an overview on the concepts, topics, research questions, and challenges.
- ZeitschriftenartikelThe Individual in the Data — the Aspect of Personal Relevance in Designing Casual Data Visualisations(i-com: Vol. 16, No. 3, 2017) Meier, Sebastian; Glinka, KatrinOver the last two decades, data visualisation has diffused into the broader realm of mass communication. Before this shift, tools and displays of data-driven geographic- and information visualisation were mostly used in expert contexts. By now, they are also used in casual contexts, for example on newspaper websites, government data portals and many other public outlets. This diversification of the audience poses new challenges within the visualisation community. In this paper we propose personal relevance as one factor to be taken into account when designing casual data visualisations, which are meant for the communication with non-experts. We develop a conceptual model and present a related set of design techniques for interactive web-based visualisations that are aimed at activating personal relevance. We discuss our proposed techniques by applying them to a use case on the visualisation of air pollution in London (UK).
- KonferenzbeitragInformed ShoppAR - Visualizing Privacy Information in Augmented Reality(Mensch und Computer 2022 - Tagungsband, 2022) Kaiser, Jonah-Noël; Marianski, Thu; Jung, Frederike; Woźniak, Mikołaj; Boll, SusannePersonal informatics devices, such as fitness trackers, become increasingly popular. When selecting a product in store, users do not only make a decision about a product’s functionality. Beyond what is written on the packaging, a purchase also decides about which consumer data will be collected, how it will be used and with whom it will be shared. Privacy policies and terms and conditions inform users before the initial product usage. Many do not read these texts and remain unaware of what they agreed to. With this paper we argue that privacy information should be shown before purchasing a device. We explore how Augmented Reality (AR) may be used to facilitate informed decision-making. We implemented and evaluated the user experience of an AR app in a mock-up electronics store. Our results highlight the potential of AR visualizations for displaying privacy information in a purchasing context.
Summary In many applications of Computer Science specifications and implementations of process models are designed requiring detailed knowledges of basic modelling procedures. In this paper the authors develop a specific meta-terminology on a high level of abstraction by using the background of various disciplines. Different model types and their particular applications (simulation and visualization) are outlined. Some illustrative examples are used to explain the basic methods.
Summary This contribution aims to provide an overview over the different varieties of graphic design – based on experience in a large number of experimental and commercial projects. A very important part of graphic design in the context of multimedia applications is the creation and use of images, and of visualisations in particular. In this paper, we are mainly interested in the various functions of visualisations and their representational power. Other types of images, like illustrations and signs, as well as typographic design will be briefly characterised.
