- TextdokumentCorporate Digital Responsibility: Evaluating Privacy and Data Security Activities on Company-level(INFORMATIK 2021, 2021) Carl, K. ValerieThe digital economy holds new opportunities for value creation but also threats for both companies and customers. Within this setting, the concept of Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) gains traction. Building on the well-established concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, CDR entails a set of principles through which it seeks to ensure an ethical and responsible development, deployment, and use of digital technologies. To date, the scholarly conceptualization of CDR is still in its infancy. This study pursues two main objectives: Firstly, it seeks to contribute to CDR theory by providing a more in-depth conceptualization with focus on privacy and data security. Secondly, this study provides first guidance for the evaluation of CDR activities on company-level, a benchmark corpus. As work-in-progress, the focus lies on identifying a starting point for the evaluation of CDR activities concentrating on privacy and data security, and hence research opportunities related to this assessment in future.
- TextdokumentHow to apply Database Anonymity Notions to Mix Networks(INFORMATIK 2021, 2021) Roßberger, Marc; Aksoy, Alperen; Kesdoğan, DoğanCommunication networks are an indispensable part of our society. By observing network traffic, one can acquire sensitive information about individuals, businesses, or governments. Thus, the protection of this traffic data is important and a well-researched topic. While encryption can protect the content of these messages, it can not hide the link between communication partners. Mix networks can be used to achieve this anonymity goal. However, these networks can not guarantee anonymity since they only apply technical protocols to improve anonymity. On the contrary, one can guarantee anonymity when releasing information from databases. Here, the principles of k-anonymity, l-diversity, and t-closeness can be applied to determine anonymity. In this work, we transfer these principles towards network anonymity, highlight problems that occur, and give an outlook on how a protocol could look like, with which users can build anonymity groups to guarantee anonymity.

Runners track themselves during training and big events like marathons races with dedicated wearable devices or smartphones. We analyzed freely accessible and supposedly anonymous respectively pseudonymous tracking data of three marathon events. Tracking data were collected by a single live GPS tracking provider, here Racemap. All data were publicly available. Thereby, we found out that it is possible to link these data sources with other public online resources to re-identify a person and to gather further sensible personal information (e.g., private or working addresses). Furthermore, we propose measures that participants, providers and organizers could carry out in order to ensure data privacy.

ValerieAdvancing digital technologies and the omnipresent digitalization bear chances but also threats for companies and consumers. Especially data privacy and security risks remain one key concern of consumers. However, fulfilling legally binding requirements is not sufficient anymore for many consumers. Instead, consumers expect companies to behave ethically responsible and voluntarily assume more responsibilities in the digital context, particularly related to data privacy and security. Broader approaches, like the emerging concept of Corporate Digital Responsibility, make it possible to see responsibility with regard to data privacy and security in the broader context of a company’s digital responsibilities and thus to develop a more holistic understanding. However, responsible behavior alone is not enough; rather an adequate communication is the evaluation basis of consumers. Accordingly, this work-in-progress evaluates current corporate communication regarding data privacy and security from an ethical view, thus illustrating best practices and paving future paths for corporate communication.

It enables business models that allow users to consume content and services free of charge, while their providers generate revenue with every visitor. These advertisements are specifically tailored to each user to increase the probability that a user actually clicks on them. However, in order to personalize these advertisements, tracking techniques are used to generate profiles for every visitor. Canvas fingerprinting is a modern technique to identify users across multiple websites. Since the generation of such fingerprints takes place completely absent from the users’ attention, this paper presents a browser extension to uncover these fingerprints in real-time. Furthermore, an analysis of today’s usage of canvas fingerprinting is conducted to evaluate the role of it in Web tracking practices. We found that canvas fingerprinting is hardly used for Web tracking, while simultaneously learning that it is applied in the field of cyber security.

Recent developments in healthcare such as the proposal of the European Health Data Space point towards a more data-driven future of diagnostics and therapy. These developments lead to new challenges, especially in how to design interaction between individuals and their personal health data. With this proposed workshop we want to stimulate discussion about these challenges from the interaction perspective and critically ask, where our health data should lie in the future and who will be owning it.
