- KonferenzbeitragEMS-based actuated output gestures: a design process for novices(Mensch und Computer 2020 - Tagungsband, 2020) Pfeiffer, Max; George, Niklas; Degbelo, AuriolElectrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) has been gaining increasing attention in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), owing to its potential to generate more expressive haptic feedback. Despite many hardware and software prototypes developed to study specific interaction aspects, designing EMS-based actuated gestures remains a complex endeavor. In this work, we present a design process for actuated gestures and a mobile app to support researchers and gesture designers during EMS-based gesture creation. The app covers the individual calibration of muscles, the composition of single movements into more complex gestures, and the playback of the pre-calibrated gestures. A user study with 12 participants, mostly non-familiar with EMS, has shown that the app was successful in supporting participants test actuated gestures. Our main contributions include a design process for actuated gestures, as well as an open-source app to support the approach and its first evaluation.
- KonferenzbeitragOn the Journey to Inclusive Mobility: A Solution for Neurodivergent Public Transport Users(Mensch und Computer 2024 - Workshopband, 2024) Bao, Lining; Maybauer, Finn Nils; Hartz, Katrin; Pelzer, Leonard; Lang, Patrick RaulAn accessible design is necessary for a system that is inclusive to all users regardless their abilities. Systems for public transportation often do not address the needs of neurodivergent people. Therefore a combination of Ability-Based Design (ABD) and Value-Sensitive Design (VSD) was used to elaborate a list of features to make planning and navigation apps for public transportation more supportive for neurodivergent users including people with dyslexia or ADHD. A designed solution is a travel assistant that can react to unplanned external influences and support users during their travels. A first prototype was developed and evaluated by several experts. Due to the lack of freely usable live information and disturbance messages during navigation, the development of a new navigation system is not effective. Therefore, we have generated a set of features that practitioners can integrate into existing navigation apps.

The resulting concept uses ML to match graphical user interface elements in sketches on paper to their digital counterparts to create consistent wireframes. A user study (N=20) with a working prototype shows that this concept is preferred by designers, compared to the previous manual procedure. Reflecting on our process and findings we discuss lessons learned for developing ML tools that respect practitioners’ needs and practices.

- ZeitschriftenartikelVirtual Prototyping of Mixed Reality Interfaces with Internet of Things (IoT) Connectivity(i-com: Vol. 17, No. 2, 2018) Pfeiffer, Thies; Pfeiffer-Leßmann, NadineOne key aspect of the Internet of Things (IoT) is, that human machine interfaces are disentangled from the physicality of the devices. This provides designers with more freedom, but also may lead to more abstract interfaces, as they lack the natural context created by the presence of the machine. Mixed Reality (MR) on the other hand, is a key technology that enables designers to create user interfaces anywhere, either linked to a physical context (augmented reality, AR) or embedded in a virtual context (virtual reality, VR). Especially today, designing MR interfaces is a challenge, as there is not yet a common design language nor a set of standard functionalities or patterns. In addition to that, neither customers nor future users have substantial experiences in using MR interfaces. Prototypes can contribute to overcome this gap, as they continuously provide user experiences of increasing realism along the design process. We present ExProtoVAR, a tool that supports quick and lightweight prototyping of MR interfaces for IoT using VR technology.
