- WorkshopbeitragAchievements in Exergames for Parkinson s Patients(Mensch & Computer 2012: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Springer, Melanie; Herrlich, Marc; Krannich, Dennis; Malaka, RainerWhile playing good games should be intrinsically rewarding, additional extrinsic rewards such as achievements if applied with care can further enhance the game experience and foster player motivation. However, if applied in an uninformed way, extrinsically induced motivation can also devalue the intrinsic rewards in the player s perception. The impact of achievements on the game experience of special target groups like older people suffering from Parkinson s disease is still largely unexplored. In this paper, two types of achievements are evaluated for the exergame Sterntaler . Sterntaler was specifically developed for patients suffering from Parkinson s disease to motivate them to do physical exercises. Our results show that the majority of the participants prefer achievements to no achievements, with a near equal split between the different types of achievements included in this study.
- KonferenzbeitragAutonomous Driving and the Elderly: Perceived Risks and Benefits(Mensch und Computer 2018 - Workshopband, 2018) Schmargendorf, Maike; Schuller, Hans-Martin; Böhm, Patricia; Isemann, Daniel; Wolff, ChristianAutonomous driving offers possibilities to simplify and enhance the lives of many people. One group that could benefit a lot from autonomous driving is elderly people. In this contribution, we examine the opportunities and risks that elderly people see in autonomous driving. This was done by conducting semi-structured interviews with 10 participants which offered some insight into the acceptance of autonomous driving among elderly people. The identified perceived benefits and risks are validated by an online survey in which 113 people from 59 to 90 years of age have taken part. In general, elderly people are not rejecting the idea of using autonomous driving altogether. They see benefits in increased mobility and therefore greater independence at a higher age as it allows disabled people to regain lost mobility. However, our study also revealed privacy and security concerns, factors known to have a negative impact on technology adoption.
- KonferenzbeitragGamification in the inDAgo HelpMe application(Mensch & Computer 2014 - Tagungsband, 2014) Baumann, Kristian; Klein, Peter; Mrsic Carl, Antonija; Bender, DeniseThe changing demographic structures in western societies have led to a higher need for assistance for elderly people in their everyday lives. Staying mobile is very important for the quality of life, but is anything but simple when getting older. The research project inDAgo, a project initiated by research facilities in and around the city of Darmstadt, Germany, targets this problem. A first result of this project is the HelpMe application (app). By means of this app, elderly people can easily transmit in difficult situations a call for help to a network of trustworthy people willing to assist. They then receive quick and uncomplicated support by helpers in their vicinity.
- ZeitschriftenartikelMultimodality in Design of Tangible Systems(i-com: Vol. 11, No. 3, 2012) Tellioğlu, Hilda; Ehrenstrasser, Lisa; Spreicer, WolfgangIn this paper we present how we applied and analyzed multimodality in design of tangible communication systems for elderly. First we define six categories of multimodality (aural, visual, tactile, gesture, posture, and space), which we integrate in our design processes and design artifacts. We illustrate how user interaction has been established, especially when multimodality is central to our approach. We also discuss multimodal design in context of user experiences, user-centered design, and participatory design approaches. We show the added value and change of focus through multimodality in design processes. We analyze our findings before we conclude our paper.
