- Konferenzbeitrag"But where would I even start?": developing (gender) sensitivity in HCI research and practice(Mensch und Computer 2020 - Tagungsband, 2020) Burtscher, Sabrina; Spiel, KattaFunding bodies increasingly require researchers to address gender in their proposals — often framed around binary notions. With power structures emboldening inequality highly prevalent and persuasive in Western societies, these seep into current practices of Computer Science and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research. Hence, developing an increased awareness of our societal responsibility towards equity can be challenging without an appropriate starting point. We present a close reading of literature discussing gender sensitivity in HCI research to provide practical guidance in the form of recommendations for the design, proposal, conduct and presentation of research. Our analysis provides a starting point for HCI students and interested researchers to explore questions and issues around gender and to identify how gender relates to their research. This sensitisation may aid them in further reflecting on how they might better serve marginalised populations through their work.
- TextdokumentHow gender is understood and analyzed in current egovernment research – a scoping literature review(INFORMATIK 2022, 2022) Dhungel,Anna-KatharinaThe division of gender into woman and man is controversially discussed in social discourse. Different approaches and proposed solutions are thereby addressed in the public debate. Building on that, this paper examines the prevailing understanding of gender in egovernment research by means of a scoping literature review. The results show that although a binary understanding is prevalent in the studies examined, there is by no means a uniform understanding of gender. It has also been shown that gender is often considered in data collection but neglected in analysis. It remains to be seen how egovernment research can respond appropriately to this social discourse without forfeiting scientific principles such as those of consistent definitions.
- KonferenzbeitragImpact of Gender and Age on performing Search Tasks Online(Mensch & Computer 2012: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Singer, Georg; Norbisrath, Ulrich; Lewandowski, DirkMore and more people use the Internet to carry out tasks of their daily work routine. To find the right information online Web search engines are the tools of their choice. Apart from finding facts, people use search engines to also execute rather complex and time consuming search tasks. So far search engines have been following the one-for-all approach to serve its users and little is known about the impact of gender and age on people s Web search performance. In this article we present a study that examines (1) how female and male Web users carry out simple and complex search tasks, and (2) how the age of the users impacts their search performance. The laboratory study was done with 56 ordinary people carrying out 12 search tasks each. Our findings confirm that age impacts the search performance significantly while gender influences were smaller than expected.
- Zeitschriftenartikel“Let’s Talk about Gender” – Development of a Card Deck on (Gender) Sensitivity in HCI Research and Practice Based on a Contrasting Literature Review(i-com: Vol. 20, No. 1, 2021) Burtscher, Sabrina; Spiel, KattaFunding bodies in Western societies increasingly require researchers to address gender in their proposals – though often exclusively framed around binary notions. With oppressive power structures being prevalent and persuasive, these seep into current practices of Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. However, current curricula rarely provide actors in this space with grounded guidance on gender issues tied to their inquiries. Hence, developing an increased awareness of our societal responsibility towards equity can be challenging without an appropriate starting point. Drawing on a close reading of select literature discussing gender sensitivity in HCI research, we derived practical guidance in the form of recommendations for the design, proposal, conduct and presentation of research. Based on these recommendations, we then present the design of a card deck and initial tests thereof at ditact women’s IT summer university. Our analysis offers a starting point for HCI students and interested researchers to explore questions and issues around gender and to identify how gender relates to their research. This sensitisation may aid them in further reflecting on how they might better account for gendered implications of their work.
- TextdokumentMaking Remote Work for Women in Tech(INFORMATIK 2022, 2022) Marsden,Nicola; Holtzblatt,KarenRemote working during the pandemic goes far beyond the global remote work that occurred in prior years. In this paper, we look at remote working from the point of view of creating the experiences women need to thrive. Within the context of our research on retaining women in tech, we have studied the impact of remote work on women. We reveal our findings and indicate how to improve the experience of tech women in remote work.
- KonferenzbeitragThe Influence of Computer-Related Attributions on System Evaluation in Usability Testing(i-com: Vol. 16, No. 1, 2017) Niels, Adelka; Janneck, MoniqueComputer-related attributions are cognitions related to the causes and effects of user interactions – or, in other words, subjective explanations of users of why specific system reactions occur. Prior research has revealed different attribution styles, which influence how users interact with computers and how they perceive situations of failure and success. In this paper, we report on a study investigating how computer-related attributions influence users’ perceptions and evaluations of interactive systems. To that end, we conducted usability tests with users and measured both system evaluations and attributions. Results show correlations between attributions and usability as well as user experience measures, indicating that users’ attributions do influence their evaluations of the test systems. Furthermore, gender differences were revealed. Practical and research implications are described.
