A key challenge in this context is to connect the end users to the data without the many technical obstacles. Therefore, we present a versatile platform that not only integrates and processes big geodata of highly diverse origin and type, but also provides access to these resources in ways that reflect the individual user’s requirements and expertise. Based on free and open-source software building blocks, our datacube facilitates scientific computation through R and Python environments or direct API access, including emergent technologies such as openEO, STAC, and COG. At the same time, the results are delivered to easy-to-use applications that adequately present them to non-technical experts. We detail the architecture of the system and demonstrate a use case serving computed plant vitality information directly to farmers in the field.

- KonferenzbeitragA Prototypical Photo Sorting Study Design for Comparing Interaction Styles(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Hahn, Jürgen; Wimmer, RaphaelWe discuss a first version of a extensible study design for a generic image-sorting task. It allows for comparing qualitative and quantitative properties of different interaction styles (e.g., direct manipulation, CLI, tangible interaction), input modalities (e.g., mouse vs. touch screen), output modalities, and UI implementations. Therefore, the study design may be of use for designing reproducible and replicable studies. Study participants are asked to sort a set of 27 photos into five categories where each of the photos depict one distinct topic belonging to only one of the categories. We conducted a first pilot study using this design, comparing a desktop GUI, an interactive tabletop, and physical photos. Task completion time was significantly lower when sorting physical photos than in the other two conditions. The study results may serve as a baseline and show limitations of the preliminary design.

Preference elicitation interfaces in existing solutions mostly use 5-point rating scales and are not tailored for group tasks and the underlying aggregation strategies. There is little work that addresses the design of suitable preference elicitation interfaces for group scenarios. In this paper, we propose, prototype, and evaluate novel user interface concepts that are tailored for aggregation strategies. In total, we introduce 8 solutions which seek to make the underlying strategies more transparent to the users. We present two user interfaces for each selected strategy and compare them in a user study. The results demonstrate that the presented prototypes were well received by most of the participants. Except for one draft solution, most participants agreed or strongly agreed that the proposed user interfaces are suitable for the respective strategy. Moreover, our findings suggest that there is a correlation between the complexity of aggregation strategies and the feedback received by the participants. This implies that it makes sense to hide the underlying logic when using complicated strategies. Furthermore, the results indicate that user interface elements should be tailored to the aggregation strategy.
