- ReportCompatibility of Support and Autonomy in Personalized HCI(2020) Fietkau, Julian; Balthasar, MandyDevelopers and designers of interactive digital systems are faced with many chal-lenges, some less visible than others. One of these more subtle balancing acts is be-tween personalized user support and unrestricted user autonomy. It raises the ques-tion how a supportive design that takes a user’s needs and preferences into account can be implemented within a technical system while at the same time allowing the user to make decisions freely without restrictions. How can autonomy by design be incorporated into the process? In this paper we describe the breadth of choice heu-ristic, which can show where the support of the user by the system stops and a re-striction of the user’s autonomy begins. To this end, we reference existing literature on similar issues, develop our own conclusions and apply them to our work in a pro-ject on IT for elderly people.
- KonferenzbeitragForegrounding Values through Public Participation: Eliciting Values of Citizens in the Context of Mobility Data Donation(Mensch und Computer 2023 - Tagungsband, 2023) Sörries, Peter; Franzen, Daniel; Sperl, Markus; Müller-Birn, ClaudiaCitizen science (CS) projects are conducted with interested volunteers and have already shown promise for large-scale scientific research. However, CS tends to cultivate the sharing of large amounts of data. Towards this, our research aims to understand better citizens’ potential privacy concerns in such participation formats. We, therefore, investigate how meaningful public participation can be facilitated to foreground citizens’ values regarding mobility data donation in CS. In this regard, we developed a two-step method: (1) a workshop concept for participatory value elicitation and (2) an analysis procedure to examine the empirical data collected systematically. Our findings based on three workshops provide new directions for improving data donation practices in CS.
- KonferenzbeitragOn the Journey to Inclusive Mobility: A Solution for Neurodivergent Public Transport Users(Mensch und Computer 2024 - Workshopband, 2024) Bao, Lining; Maybauer, Finn Nils; Hartz, Katrin; Pelzer, Leonard; Lang, Patrick RaulAn accessible design is necessary for a system that is inclusive to all users regardless their abilities. Systems for public transportation often do not address the needs of neurodivergent people. Therefore a combination of Ability-Based Design (ABD) and Value-Sensitive Design (VSD) was used to elaborate a list of features to make planning and navigation apps for public transportation more supportive for neurodivergent users including people with dyslexia or ADHD. A designed solution is a travel assistant that can react to unplanned external influences and support users during their travels. A first prototype was developed and evaluated by several experts. Due to the lack of freely usable live information and disturbance messages during navigation, the development of a new navigation system is not effective. Therefore, we have generated a set of features that practitioners can integrate into existing navigation apps.
