Zusammenfassung

The Environmental Department at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics is engaged in research and consulting in the areas of air pollution transport and deposition. Three case studies are presented in order to give an overview of the different types of models that are used at the ZAMG. Local scale trajectories based on diagnostic wind field calculations are used to investigate episodes with high particle matter (PM10) concentrations at stations of the air quality network in Vienna. The dispersion of an odour plume over Vienna is simulated with a regional scale lagrangian model (Schorling & Partner, 1996) based on all available meteorological observations. Long-range trajectories, trajectory statistics and inspection of satellite images reveal the most probable source areas when large scale transport of dust caused measured high particle matter concentrations. The data from the dense observational network of the ZAMG (approximately 125 stations) and a close cooperation with national and international institutions such as municipal services and the ECMWF provide a high-quality input for the various models.
