Zusammenfassung

The appropriate mapping of environmental knowledge to management, information and decision making systems is an issue of growing interest during the last years. The fusion of IT-based system methods and tools to environmental management problems and applications has led to a general “consensus” in terms of the advantages occurring from the combination of software and environmental engineering. Yet, the interpretation of these developments and of the corresponding progress made so far varies between members of the scientific community, reflecting the different views and “points of departure” in the way that an environmental management and decision making problem is interpreted and solved. In the current paper, the concept of Environmental Informatics as an “effective” bridge between the environmental and software engineering domains is being investigated and discussed, making use of examples related to various Urban Air Quality Management and Information System components.
