- KonferenzbeitragReasoning about the role of information systems in trusting decisions(Information Systems Technology and its Applications, international conference ISTA'2001, 2001) Perc, PrimozThe interest in the study of trust has grown steadily since 1990 in a wide range of scholarly disciplines. The science of information systems is no exception, since the concepts of information and trust are inseparably intermingled. Meanwhile, there exist numerous applications of trust – most commonly in the areas of security and content filtering - many of which have already successfully been tested in real-world environments. However, with some exceptions, relatively little has been done in laying the conceptual foundations for discussing the relationship between information systems and trust. In this paper we argue that especially in environments, characterized through low presence of institutional mechanisms, availability of information is an important factor in facilitating trusting decisions. Starting from the observations of the confidence building through information in the real world, we identify and classify the potentials of information systems in facilitating trusting decision in virtual environments such as the Internet.

- KonferenzbeitragA technique for information system integration(Information Systems Technology and its Applications, international conference ISTA'2001, 2001) Greco, Sergio; Pontieri, Luigi; Zumpano, EsterNowadays, a central topic in database science is the need of an integrated access to large amounts of data provided by various information sources whose contents are strictly related. Often information sources have been designed independently for autonomous applications, so they may present several kinds of heterogeneity. Particularly hard to manage is the semantic heterogeneity, which is due to schema and value inconsistencies. In this paper, we focus our attention mainly on the inconsistency which arises when conflicting instances related to the same concept and possibly coming from different sources are integrated. First, we introduce an operator, called Merge Operator, which allows us to combine data coming from different sources, preserving the information contained in each of them. Then, we present a variant of this operator, the Extended Merge Operator, which associates the integrated data with some information about the process by which they have been obtained. Finally, in order to manage conflicts among integrated data, we briefly present a technique for computing consistent answers over inconsistent databases.

- KonferenzbeitragSupporting behavioral contracts for COM components(Information Systems Technology and its Applications, international conference ISTA'2001, 2001) Bhagat, Sonal; Joshi, Rushikesh K.Specifying behavioral specifications for components apart from the conventional syntactic interface specifications can be very useful in component based system development. Preconditions and postconditions describe one form of behavioral aspects of components. We discuss a tool and an implementation mechanism to incorporate behavioral contracts expressed in terms of preconditions and postconditions for COM components. A method invocation on a component is executed only if the precondition is satisfied. Similarly, the results are successfully returned upon successful execution of the postcondition. A design criterion was to facilitate contract specifications for existing components with least amount of changes at client and server side code. The tool requires that the component should implement an additional interface called IAccess if the behavioral contract needs component state. No modification is required to existing clients of the component.
- KonferenzbeitragDistributed objects performance optimization and modeling(Information Systems Technology and its Applications, international conference ISTA'2001, 2001) Juric, Matjaz B.; Rozman, Ivan; Hericko, Marjan; Welzer, Tatjana; Gyorkos, JozsefThis paper is focused on the performance analysis, comparison and optimization of distributed object middleware for Java 2: RMI (Remote Method Invocation), CORBA IDL (Interface Definition Language) and RMI-IIOP (Remote Method Invocation on Internet Inter-ORB Protocol). The paper presents the following contributions to the research on distributed object performance. First, a detailed performance analysis is provided with the comparison. These results help to understand how the models perform. Second, an overhead analysis has been done, which explains why there are differences in performance. Third, optimizations and improved performance for RMI-IIOP and CORBA IDL are presented. These show considerably better performance in all areas compared to the original versions.
- KonferenzbeitragModeling service-flow(Information Systems Technology and its Applications, international conference ISTA'2001, 2001) Klischewski, Ralf; Wetzel, Ingrid; Baharami, AliAs e-business is invading the service industry and the public sector, there is a need for a service-flow management of those processes, which consist of a sequence of interrelated sub-services. Making use of the potentials of internet applications, service-flow management aims at providing these service in an effi- cient manner, at improving customer relationship management in the field of ten- sion between routine and situated/personalized service provision, and at providing flexible IT support for service providers and/or clients at each service point. Based on object oriented, workflow and user oriented modeling techniques, we model service-flow patterns by identifying sequences of service points, each capturing the specific service tasks and their respective pre- and post-conditions from the pro- vider’s point of view. This service-flow modeling approach may be supported by the modeling tools Visio® and Process@Work. We present some results from two cases of service-flow modeling, each with a short case description and a discussion of the models’ application for technical and orga nizational development.

The system is oriented towards a solution of socioeconomic problems. The report describes "Monitor 2.1" system, which have been developed for The Ministry of Economy of Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The report contents the principles and approaches to the development of the next version of that system – "Monitor 3.0". The concept of data warehouses is used for implementation of the last one. The needs for the solving of socioeconomic problems to integrate and accommodate large collection of socioeconomic data are discussed. The report contents a comparison between “Monitor 2.1” and "Monitor 3.0" systems. It shows the advantages of the "Monitor 3.0" system development approach. Papers summarize the last year’s author’s experience in the development of information - analytic systems for socioeconomic problems.

- KonferenzbeitragAn enterprise financial state estimation based on data mining(Information Systems Technology and its Applications, international conference ISTA'2001, 2001) Godlevsky, Mikhail D.; Orekhov, Sergey V.This paper is concerned with the data mining application to business process automation. A short tutorial on stages of financial analysis of an enterprise is given. A brief description of data mining components for financial analysis of an enterprise is presented in the paper. The main element of data mining application is fuzzy neural system. The structure of fuzzy neural system includes linguistic variable "financial state", neural network and fuzzy rules. The fuzzy neural system forms the financial state estimation based on balance sheets from dataware house of an enterprise. The data mining application has been realized as software in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. The software was applied to estimation of financial state of Kharkov (Ukrainian) enterprises in 1999. Finally, the set of enterprises for investment was found.
