As vehicles become more context sensitive with sensors providing detailed information about the exterior, understanding the context and state of the driver becomes crucial as well. This paper presents an approach to develop a system to recognize human gestures in the automotive cockpit. It provides an overview of the proposed technology and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of certain systems. Qualitative user research studies highlight recommendations for future implementations.
