The energy consumption of households plays a major role in Germany. Most of the energy is required for the heating of space and water. The distribution of energy requirements between the two is important for investigations and regulations regarding, for example, CO2 releases but no reliable data is currently available. The present paper uses two methods to estimate the respective proportions. In the first method, the starting point is the energy consumption of households, the determination of the energy required for heating and the final calculation of the energy consumption for hot water by a given percentage of the total consumption. In the second method, the starting point is the water consumption and the proportion of hot water. Making use of a formula the required energy is calculated and compared to the energy consumption determined by the first method. As a result, it may be concluded that the share of energy for water heating is frequently underestimated.de
