dc.description.abstract | By an examination of 13 studies on the evaluation of environmental management systems (EMS) and the use that companies and stakeholders make of it the authors wanted to summarize the results in order to learn for the fine-tuning of political measures and to see how evaluations can be designed more successfully. The EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is the only EMS which provides for a verified environmental statement and aims at informing the public about the environmental performance although the possibilities of EMAS for environmental communication are still rather under-utilised. The studies showed that there is a positive effect on the environmental performance of the participants, although it can hardly be quantified. We also found a common lack of a solid and functional methodology in most of the evaluation-studies. | de |
