In this paper the River Information System architecture is formally described at the highest level by the standard Unified Modeling Language (UML). UML package diagram, which represents necessary packages (subsystems) and their mutual communication, was created. Based on that description the detailed Object Oriented (OO) development of each subsystem can be performed later. Here we propose a solution using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) as the format of exchanged data. The example of the automatic eXtensible Markup Language (XML) processing is described as well. These activities are a part of the CRORIS programme carried out by the Rudjer Boskovic Institute and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Communications of the Republic of Croatia.de
