Zusammenfassung
The realization of the EU water framework guideline, the Natura 2000 site classification as well as regional planning programs require new planning and decision instruments. In the future watershed management has also to consider ecological goals.
Since the middle of the Nineties, selected torrent catchment areas are examined by the Forest Service for Torrent and Avalanche Control in order to evaluate natural hazards and land use problems.
By the example of the Schwechat catchment area in the Wienerwald region a regional study was compiled. The study represents a comprehensive planning basis for structural and ecological measures as well as an overall watershed management tool in an ecologically sensitive region.
Regional studies are usually based on remote sensing methods, geo-information systems and flood models. In addition to the measure program, social, economic and ecological aspects of the landscape development are considered.
