With the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council) the European Union established a new and unique framework for Community action in the field of water policy. The river basin is the administrative basis for river management and the information required covers the fields of hydrogeology, climatology, biology, and land use as well data on ambient water quality, emissions, licensing, legal status of protected areas and socio-economic issues. Due to the river basin approach co-operation between administrative units at all levels (including Member States) is essential. This paper gives a general description of the data management requirements necessary for the implementation of the directive.de
