The theoretical aspects of the interrelation of health and the environment are discussed, and European milestones on legal measures and research activities are presented. Specific attention is paid to the practical possibilities of interlinking research on environment and health. With regard to these possibilities a timeline of programmes of WHO, the EU and Austria focusing on the use of ICT are listed, where two selected Austrian research projects are presented in detail. An important challenge in the area of health and environment is the limited empirical evidence of environmental influences on health as they are usually multifactorial and health problems often manifest themselves delayed. However even in areas where the evidence is clear, the implementation of measures can be a very slow process. In order to accelerate the process, the exchange of knowledge experience is crucial. ICT can help to accelerate knowledge sharing and websites are essential platforms to reach experts as well as the general public.ICT in Health and Environment in Europe with special focus on AustriaText/Conference Paper
