The river basin is the administrative basis for river management and the information required covers the fields of hydrogeology, climatology, biology, and land use as well data on ambient water quality, emissions, licensing, legal status of protected areas and socio-economic issues. Due to the river basin approach co-operation between administrative units at all levels (including Member States) is essential. This paper gives a general description of the data management requirements necessary for the implementation of the directive. The EU Water Framework Directive – A Challenge for Information ManagementText/Conference Paper
