- Conference paperImplementation of flexible and open course material for computer programming courses(Proceedings of DELFI 2024, 2024) Speiser, Sebastian; Baur, Melanie; Sedlmair, JohannaWe report on our practical experiences of teaching computer programming across several study courses in multiple disciplines. We focus on creating learning material in a way that improves upon the current state of using presentations slides. We address: i) collaboration, ii) interactive teaching, iii) self-study, iv) progress tracking and v) individualisation. We are deriving requirements for course material that improves in these categories. We describe three systems that we used in different study courses, assessing them against our specified requirements. Finally, we outline our vision of creating an open, modular and decentralized approach to learning materials.
- Conference paperA novel project assignment fostering self-competence and reflection using robotics for first-year CS students(Proceedings of DELFI 2024, 2024) Baur, Melanie; Sedlmair, Johanna; Speiser, SebastianWe developed and evaluated a novel project assignment tailored to computer science Bachelor freshmen, which challenges them to program a self-driving car using robotics, as part of orientation week at our university. The project assignment is a main element of our orientation week, supporting the transition of our new students into the higher education system. Therefore, we facilitate peer-to-peer interaction, encourage students to reflect on their academic role, and focus on skills they need for studying. A requirements analysis is the basis for the redesign, leading to improvements in achieving the program objectives. Evaluation results support the significant effectiveness of the redesign. The requirements developed can serve as a blueprint for creating engaging project assignments for various other degree programs and beyond. The assignment is available on the ZOERR platform licensed under Creative Commons.
