- KonferenzbeitragFlexible and efficient sensor data processing – A hybrid approach(Datenbanksysteme für Business, Technologie und Web (BTW), 2011) Busemann, Claas; Kuka, Christian; Nicklas, Daniela; Boll, SusanneThe integration of various sensor data into existing software systems is becoming increasingly important for companies and even private users. As the number of embedded devices of all sorts (sensors, mobile phones, cameras etc.) also constantly increases, the development of flexible sensor applications gets more and more difficult. These applications have to handle a large number of sensors transmitting their data in various formats using different protocols. Middleware technologies are a good way to hide the complexity of communication protocols and data processing from the application. However, integrating efficient sensor data processing into a middleware requires several design choices which depend on the planned applications. Usually such systems are either efficient, allowing the processing of large numbers of data streams, or flexible, allowing the easy modification of the processing during runtime. In this paper a hybrid approach is introduced combining the benefits of two popular processing technologies, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and Data Stream Management Systems (DSMS), and by that enable the processing of large numbers of data streams while at the same time the system can be flexibly modified. Therefore these two technologies are analyzed to identify the benefits and disadvantages depending on their flexibility and efficiency.
- KonferenzbeitragOpen sensor platforms: the sensor web enablement framework and beyond(MMS 2011: Mobile und ubiquitäre Informationssysteme - Proceedings zur 6. Konferenz Mobile und ubiquitäre Informationssysteme (MMS 2011), 2011) Funk, Alexander; Busemann, Claas; Kuka, Christian; Boll, Susanne; Nicklas, DanielaOver the last years, more and more sensor systems emerged that can not only be accessed but also controlled and configured using the Internet. This trend allows mobile applications that rely on sensor data; however, the access and configuration of sensor systems is a tedious task. As many sensor manufacturers implement their own protocols, there are many communication protocols. Although unifying standards like the Sensor Web Enablement framework (SWE) - developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) - exists, they are still not widely used by off-the-shelf sensor systems. As a result, other middleware platforms like the Sensor Configuration and Aggregation Middleware for Multi Platform Interchange (SCAMPI) have been developed. In this paper, we analyze the Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) framework regarding requirements of sensor-based applications, show how it can be integrated in SCAMPI, and highlight the strengths and limitations of SWE based on the experiences we made during the integration process. The implementation and evaluation of the system shows the benefits and disadvantages of the SWE framework from the perspective of a developer who wants to integrate the SWE framework into a middleware as well as from the perspective of a developer who wants to build a system around the SWE framework. The results of this paper can be used to assess whether the SWE standard and its application will be useful for a given scenario.
