- KonferenzbeitragA Hurricane Lamp in a Dark Night: Exploring Smartphone Use for Acculturation by Refugees(Workshop Gemeinschaften in Neuen Medien (GeNeMe) 2018, 2018) Merz, Alexander B.; Seone, Mamadou; Seeber, Isabella; Maier, RonaldRefugees arriving in Europe face numerous socio-cultural challenges towards being integrated members of their host society. While acculturation strategies and ICT use of refugees have been studied separately, we investigate refugees’ smartphone use for acculturation by conducting qualitative interviews with 30 refugees. We contribute five practices related to acculturation that express refugees’ intercultural exchange within the host society while preserving their original culture: seek information online; communicate with family and friends abroad; meet locals; meet peers and counteract boredom. Tied to these practices, we find the five consequences empowerment, connection to host society, distraction, sense of belonging and connection to origin, which give an account of the various acculturation issues and how refugees use smartphones in support thereof.
- KonferenzbeitragActive documents supporting knowledge sharing in knowledge- intensive cooperation(6th Conference on Professional Knowledge Management – From Knowledge to Action, 2011) Trögl, Mathias; Maier, RonaldAs the knowledge perspective has become more important and knowledge has been accepted as a resource with ever increasing importance for an organization's success, it has also changed the views on cooperation. Working in partnerships focused on supporting each other in creating and sharing knowledge seems to be an efficient way to reduce costs and enable synergistic effects. This has given rise to the knowledge-intensive cooperation as a special kind of cooperation. A huge amount of transferred knowledge in this kind of cooperation are shared, e.g., by transferring electronic documents. Today, organizations have the choice of a considerable number of knowledge management instruments to support humans to overcome timeor spatial-based barriers concerning knowledge transfer. These instruments can be bundled into complex enterprise knowledge infrastructure (EKI)1 suites. However, these have an organizational focus and are rarely prepared for knowledge that crosses organizational boundaries. Taking into account the considerable efforts for establishing EKIs, start up of an EKI specifically for knowledge-intensive cooperation is expensive, takes a lot of time and, in case of a network of multiple and changing partners, often is infeasible. The goal of this article is offering the concept of active documents as a way to overcome restrictions of EKI in knowledge sharing between organizational boundaries in knowledge-intensive cooperation. Using active documents makes it easy to start document-based knowledge sharing based on a more client perspective. Additionally it offers comfortable possibilities for automatic integration of those documents into a server based EKI in the future.
- KonferenzbeitragApplication and evaluation of the multi-dimensional knowledge framework approach(6th Conference on Professional Knowledge Management – From Knowledge to Action, 2011) Böhlen, Roger; Hinkelmann, KnutThis paper discusses the application and evaluation of the multidimensional knowledge framework approach on a real life case study. In a first stage the framework is explained and the case study where the framework is assessed is described. At the end it is evaluated if the framework helps to identify strengths and weaknesses which can be exploited to improve knowledge maturing in an organisation.
- KonferenzbeitragAssessing Informal Social Learning at the Workplace – A Revalidation Case from Healthcare(Workshop Gemeinschaften in Neuen Medien (GeNeMe) 2015, 2015) Steurer, Michael; Thalmann, Stefan; Maier, Ronald; Treasure-Jones, Tamsin; Bibby, John; Kerr, MickyThis paper explores how informal learning can be assessed in the work environment which bears difficulties, as informal learning is largely invisible and people lack awareness of informal learning. We perform an exploratory case study involving 24 healthcare professionals representing small and medium sized enterprises (SME) in six healthcare networks in the UK. We use the existing revalidation procedure as implemented by the National Health Service (NHS) England to discuss our results. Our results comprise a description of six indicators, three of which can be used to assess informal learning activities and three of which can be used to assess informal learning outcomes. Our findings stress the importance of the social context of informal learning at the workplace. Finally, we discuss the implementation of these indicators to support informal social learning.
- KonferenzbeitragCase-based menu creation as an example of individualized experience management(6th Conference on Professional Knowledge Management – From Knowledge to Action, 2011) Bach, Kerstin; Reuss, Pascal; Althoff, Klaus-DieterThis paper presents a Case-Based Reasoning application for individualized experience management. We describe how such intelligent technologies can be used for implementing applications in small and medium sized enterprises by introducing a realized application. The application is called dinerplus and organizes guests and menus for a hobby chef, restaurant or catering service. Further we discuss related work on the aspect of experience management in SMEs using intelligent systems.

- KonferenzbeitragCR2S: competency roadmap to strategy(6th Conference on Professional Knowledge Management – From Knowledge to Action, 2011) Bellandi, Valerio; Ceravolo, Paolo; Damiani, Ernesto; Frati, FulvioIt is well acknowledged that Human Resources are one of the most important assets of a company; as a consequence, Competency Management became a well established approach for organizing workforce recruitment, training and development. At the same time, Competency Management is more and more moving towards a tight integration with business and knowledge management frameworks, having a crucial role in business process re-engineering, giving to competencies a central role to achieve higher performance variance, determine better return-on-investment or economic value of competency initiatives, implementing deep organizational transformation, and change market and organizational strategies. Our approach, taking inspiration from Technology Roadmaps, proposes the Competency Roadmap to Strategy, an integrated model for organizing the competency bouquet of a company in coordination with strategic desing of business activities.
- KonferenzbeitragCultural influence on intuitive decision making(6th Conference on Professional Knowledge Management – From Knowledge to Action, 2011) Heinze, PriscillaKnowledge intensive decisions are met based on existing facts and, more often than not, the intuition of the makers. This paper connects the emergence of intuition as a product of tacit knowledge processing. It deals mainly with the question whether or not intuition is a suitable instrument to base a decision on. It shows that cultural differences play an important role in the process. By comparing some fields of practices of intuitive decision making this paper suggests some parameters that focus on the relevant exploitation of intuitive decision making.
