- ZeitschriftenartikelThe Effect of Organization Size and Sector on Adopting Business Process Management(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 60, No. 6, 2018) Van Looy, Amy; Van den Bergh, JoachimThe business process management (BPM) discipline is starting to recognize the importance of context-awareness. In spite of this recognition, few studies investigate the effect of diverse contextual factors on BPM. To fill this gap, the study statistically analyzes the effect of organization size and sector, as specific contextual factors, on the adoption of BPM. The latter is measured by means of BPM capabilities for which data was collected from 2309 employees in 72 organizations. The study relies on the Contingency Theory by hypothesizing that, in practice, organizations adopt BPM by taking into account factors that fit an organization’s context. Surprisingly, the results do not show a dependency between BPM adoption and organization size, suggesting that BPM adoption levels can equally be achieved by large or small organizations. In contrast, a dependency is found for organization sector (partly based on market velocity), suggesting different BPM adoption practices and/or speed in different sectors.

The success of these firm-hosted online communities depends entirely on the cooperation of a high number of customers that constantly produce valuable knowledge for firms. However, in practice, the majority of successfully implemented communities suffers from stagnation and even a decrease of member activities over time. Literature provides numerous guidelines on how to build and launch these online communities. While these models describe the initial steps of acquiring and activating a community base from scratch very well and explicitly, they neglect continuous member activation and acquistion after a successful launch. Against this background, the authors propose the Community Fostering Reference Model (CoFoRM), which represents a set of general procedures and instruments to continuously foster member activity. In this paper, the authors present the theory-driven design as well as the evaluation of the CoFoRM in a practical use setting. The evaluation results reveal that the CoFoRM represents a valuable instrument in the daily working routine of community managers, since it efficiently helps activating community members especially in the late phases of a community’s lifecycle.

- ZeitschriftenartikelBusiness Process Modeling Abstraction Based on Semi-Supervised Clustering Analysis(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 60, No. 6, 2018) Wang, Nan; Sun, Shanwu; OuYang, DantongThe most prominent Business Process Model Abstraction (BPMA) use case is the construction of the process “quick view� for rapidly comprehending a complex process. Some researchers propose process abstraction methods to aggregate the activities on the basis of their semantic similarity. One important clustering technique used in these methods is traditional k-means cluster analysis which so far is an unsupervised process without any priori information, and most of the techniques aggregate the activities only according to business semantics without considering the requirement of an order-preserving model transformation. The paper proposes a BPMA method based on semi-supervised clustering which chooses the initial clusters based on the refined process structure tree and designs constraints by combining the control flow consistency of the process and the semantic similarity of the activities to guide the clustering process. To be more precise, the constraint function is discovered by mining from a process model collection enriched with subprocess relations. The proposed method is validated by applying it to a process model repository in use. In an experimental validation, the proposed method is compared to the traditional k-means clustering (parameterized with randomly chosen initial clusters and an only semantics-based distance measure), showing that the approach closely approximates the decisions of the involved modelers to cluster activities. As such, the paper contributes to the development of modeling support for effective process model abstraction, facilitating the use of business process models in practice.

To better support advances in these areas as much as possible, it is necessary to apply econometric problems to econometric intelligent systems. The article describes an econometric OLAP framework that supports the design of a multidimensional database to secure econometric analyses to increase the effectiveness of the development of econometric intelligent systems. The first part of the article consists of the creation of formal rules for the new transformation of the econometric model (TEM) method for the econometric model transformation of multidimensional schema through the use of mathematical notation. In the proposed TEM method, the authors pay attention to the measurement of quality and understandability of the multidimensional schema, and compare the proposed method with the original TEM-CM method. In the second part of the article, the authors create a multidimensional database prototype according to the new TEM method and design an OLAP application for econometric analysis.

Despite the fact that a service guarantee can increase the satisfaction level of users, indemnities may not be commensurate with the importance of a service to a user. While predefined penalties may be insufficient to compensate for the losses of one user, another user may not suffer loss from the SLA violation. With an insurance plan, an insurer can reach an agreement with users on the premium and loss coverage volume; insurance can therefore be considered a solution for providing indemnity which is appropriate to the importance of service. An insurer cannot protect users against these losses, which are caused by a single root event, in the same way as it protects them against the losses caused by independent events. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for providing insurance coverage for such root events by limiting insurance provisions to the users with the highest priority. A criterion is presented for priority assignment to users, and an algorithm is then proposed for providing insurance according to this priority. A game-theoretic analysis is also provided to assess acceptability of the outcome of the proposed algorithm to rational users and insurers. The results of numerical experiments demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach for improving the utility of the service.
