- ZeitschriftenartikelEin UML-basiertes Framework zur Modellierung ubiquitärer Web-Anwendungen(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 44, No. 3, 2002) Hitz, Martin; Kappel, Gerti; Retschitzegger, Werner; Schwinger, WielandElectronic commerce (e-commerce) and mobile commerce (m-commerce) have dramatically boosted the demand for services which enable ubiquitous access. Ubiquity offers opportunities in terms of time aware, location aware, device aware, and personalised services. Development of ubiquitous Web applications, however, turns out to be rather complex and thus requires appropriate methodological support. Existing methods for modelling Web applications only partially match the requirements resulting from their ubiquitous nature.This article aims at filling this gap by presenting a UML based framework for modelling ubiquitous Web applications, focussing on issues of adaptation modelling. It encompasses both, context modelling by providing a physical and a logical context model, and modelling the adaptation process per se. The latter is realised in terms of a rule model enabling monitoring of context changes and activation of corresponding adaptation operations. The separation of a Web application in a stable and context independent part on the one hand and a variable and context dependent part on the other hand supports reusability and locality of change.

In order to ease the development of such systems appropriate software architectures are needed. These architectures have to take into account business aspects as well as requisite tools and products. Such an architecture is offered by Sun Microsystems in the form of the Enterprise JavaBeans specification. Based on our experience from different projects we undertake a close examination of this architecture.

With the help of a browser based interface the different components within a linguistic dialogue can be created in a task-specific and customer-specific way. Examples are the flow of speech prompts (previously recorded phrases), text-to-speech, automatic speech recognition, voice mails, fax on demand, direct connection to the call center or to separate operators, and many more. Additionally, the Phone Manager enables the combination of fixed telephone network, mobile services, data base and other computer based applications. The application can be integrated into virtually every technical infrastructure by compliance with the ECTF-standard.

Those applications can be found especially around market information systems.The application and system architecture must be suited to respond user requests even during steep load peaks. To achieve this without inappropriate infrastructure investments, most of the database requests must be captured and processed on the application server layer. Such massively parallel systems are opening scaling paths along the more cost effective application server layer.Staging and multi-granular caching are cache based optimisation strategies that are used in certain application domains. However caching is always in conflict towards personalisation and real-time information.This conflict can be resolved by the Active Caching mechanism that is integrated in the presented IS.Foundation platform. This is shown by analysing the methods and mechanisms on several aspects of the use case.
