- KonferenzbeitragTransparent User Modeling for a Mobile Personal Assistant(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Bauer, MathiasUser models (UM) – the explicit representation of all relevant aspects of a user's preferences, beliefs, etc. – form the basis of virtually all adaptive systems. While early approaches re- lied on explicit interviews to fill in the details of such a UM, more recent systems unobtrusively observe their users and automatically infer the contents of the UM. This reduces the workload for the user, but it also makes her lose control over the system's knowledge about her and the way this knowledge is used. This paper discusses the necessity for transparent user modeling as well as various techniques for achieving it.
- KonferenzbeitragPresentation of a Modular Framework for Interpretation of Sensor Data With Dynamic Bayesian Networks on Mobile Devices(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Brandherm, Boris; Schmitz, MichaelWe show in this work an example of how physiological data of a user acquired by bio sensors and interpreted by dynamic Bayesian networks on a personal mobile device are used to adapt notifications to the user state. The described sample application is an instance of our framework that is currently under development in our research group, aiming towards a modular and cross-platform toolkit for sensor integration. We will give a brief overview of the whole system with its components and conclude with an outlook on future work in this project. At the conference we want to present the example application based on this framework and the single components as described in this work.
- KonferenzbeitragSniffing Around for Providing Navigation Assistance(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Herder, EelcoIn this paper we describe an approach to adaptive navigation assistance that is meant to enhance a user’s information scent. The navigation assistance is composed of a combination of predictive user navigation modeling and common information retrieval methods. Besides assistance in forward browsing, the assistant helps users in deciding when to switch to searching or backtracking, while taking their navigation preferences into account.
- KonferenzbeitragThe Personal Reader: A Framework for Enabling Personalization Services on the Semantic Web(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Henze, Nicola; Herrlich, MarcThe Personal Reader1 provides a framework for designing, implementing and maintaining web content readers, which provide personalized enrichment of web content for each individual user. The idea of the the Personal Reader is based on a rigorous approach for applying Semantic Web technologies: A modular framework of components / services - for visualizing the Personal Reader and providing the user interface, for mediating between user requests and available personalization services, and for providing personalized recommendations and access to web content forms the basis for the Personal Reader. In this paper, we describe the architectural outline of the framework as well as some implementation details, and discuss the approach with a reference - a “Personal Reader for Learning Resources”.
- KonferenzbeitragTowards Self-Regulating Adaptive Systems(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Paramythis, AlexThis paper discusses ongoing work towards a theoretical basis intended to facilitate the development of self-regulating adaptive systems. Self-regulation refers to the capacity of the system to assess the effects of, and modify, its own adaptive behaviour in prescribed ways at run-time. Although not new, the concept of self-regulation is largely missing from existing adaptive systems, arguably due to the perceived complexity involved in its theoretical grounding and practical implementation. The paper addresses in particular the following two questions: What are the operational requirements of self-regulating adaptive systems? What implications does self-regulation impose on the modelling- and decision making- approaches used? The theoretical benefits of “clusters” of self-regulating systems, and the role of human experts in the self-regulation process are also briefly discussed.
- KonferenzbeitragAn Assessment Framework for eLearning in the Semantic Web(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Cheniti-Belcadhi, Lilia; Henze, Nicola; Braham, RafikIn this paper we present a flexible assessment framework for eLearning based on semantic web technologies. The assessment techniques are formalized as reasoning rules. These rules are able to reason over resources annotated with semantic web metadata formats and according to the standards LOM and IMS QTI. The framework is tested using TRIPLE, a rule-based language for the semantic web.
- KonferenzbeitragPersonalizing the Appearance of Content Packages(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Kröner, Alexander; Sato, HideoThe personalized delivery of content is a way of making online content portals more attractive to end users, and consequently, nowadays many online portals provide varying ways of personalizing their service. In order to facilitate the creation of such personalized services, the IMAGEN toolset came into existence. IMAGEN aims at creating personalized con- tent packages, where documents are selected from a repository with respect to the customer’s interests, and are bundled to a pack- age. The appearance of packaged documents may be revised in order to take the layout preferences of authors, service providers, and customers into account. In this contribution, we describe varying ways of personalizing the layout style of content packages, ranging from a plain exchange of styles as suggested by the content authors to a constraint-based style unification. In the sequel we describe how service providers as well as customers may take influence on that revision process in order to obtain personalized layout styles.
- KonferenzbeitragWeb Site Adaptation: Recommendation and Automatic Generation of Navigation Menus(12. GI-Workshop "Adapitivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2004) Hollink, Vera; van Someren, Maarten; ten Hagen, StephanIn recommender systems the interests of users are typically represented as unordered sets of pages. However, on web sites where the pages are not independent of each other, the order in which the pages are visited is important. A recommender should not only recommend the right pages, but also recommend them in the right order. A widely used form of recommending is the context dependent navigation menu. In this short paper we compare content and usage based methods to build navigation menus from scratch. In our experiments the navigation traces of users clearly showed stages, which indicates that users prefer to view pages in a specific order. Content based methods appear to be adequate for creating menus that group of pages with similar topics, but do not provide an ordering. Usage based methods are necessary to recommend pages that match a user’s current navigation stage.
