- WorkshopbeitragGaze-supported Interaction(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Stellmach, Sophie; Dachselt, RaimundConsidering the increasing diversity of display arrangements including wall-sized screens and multi-display setups, our eye gaze provides a particular high potential for implicit and seamless, as well as fast interactions. However, gaze-based interaction is often regarded as error-prone and unnatural, especially when restricting the input to gaze as a single modality. For this reason, we have developed several interaction techniques benefitting from gaze as an additional, implicit and fast pointing modality for roughly indicating a user s visual attention in combination with common smartphones to make more explicit and precise specifications. In our demos, we showcase two examples for more natural and yet effective ways of incorporating a user s gaze as a supporting input modality. The two application scenarios comprise (1) gaze-supported pan-and-zoom techniques using the example of GoogleEarth and (2) gaze-supported navigation and target selection in a virtual 3D scene.
- KonferenzbeitragBringing Culture into Focus(Mensch & Computer 2012: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Khaled, Rilla
- WorkshopbeitragThe World is Your Canvas: XL-Virtual Workspaces for Projector Phones(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Kaufmann, Bonifaz; Hitz, MartinPeephole interaction is a promising interaction technique for mobile projector phones. It allows the creation of extra-large virtual workspaces which contain more information than can be appropriately displayed on a small smartphone screen. In this paper we describe a projector phone prototype that implements peephole interaction without instrumenting the environment or using any additional hardware besides a smartphone and a handheld projector. This device allows for the first time to perform peephole interaction in the wild. Moreover, we demonstrate some applications we have built to exploit and investigate the full potential of peephole interaction with projector phones.
- WorkshopbeitragSpatial Grouping on Interactive Surfaces Bin & Blub(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Höchtl, Anita; Geyer, Florian; Reiterer, HaraldThis demo presents two interaction techniques for grouping items spatially on a tabletop interface. It allows participants of the conference to experience and compare the container technique Bin and the proximity technique Blub . While the container concept is similar to the folder concept on desktop systems, the proximity technique is a novel organic concept based on spatial proximity. Within an associated paper submitted to the main conference track, we studied the characteristics of both techniques in regard to grouping and regrouping performance, grouping strategies and use of multifinger input. Our study showed that more informal spatial techniques based on proximity are able to harness more benefits of direct-touch multi-finger and bimanual interaction. In our demo, participants will be able to compete in grouping items with both techniques.
- KonferenzbeitragImpact of Gender and Age on performing Search Tasks Online(Mensch & Computer 2012: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Singer, Georg; Norbisrath, Ulrich; Lewandowski, DirkMore and more people use the Internet to carry out tasks of their daily work routine. To find the right information online Web search engines are the tools of their choice. Apart from finding facts, people use search engines to also execute rather complex and time consuming search tasks. So far search engines have been following the one-for-all approach to serve its users and little is known about the impact of gender and age on people s Web search performance. In this article we present a study that examines (1) how female and male Web users carry out simple and complex search tasks, and (2) how the age of the users impacts their search performance. The laboratory study was done with 56 ordinary people carrying out 12 search tasks each. Our findings confirm that age impacts the search performance significantly while gender influences were smaller than expected.
- KonferenzbeitragEvaluating Touchscreen Interfaces of Tablet Computers for Elderly People(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Burkhard, Martin; Koch, MichaelThe AAL project SI-Screen focuses on providing an innovative user interface for elderly people enhancing their access to awareness streams of Social Networking Services by using tablet computers. As part of our attempt to investigate the acceptance of the newly developed user interface, we assessed the display size and touch input accuracy of multi-touch tablet computers in a multi-directional tapping task as proposed by the ISO 9241-9 standard. In this paper we present our methodology for evaluating touchscreen interfaces with elderly people and discuss our initial findings obtained in Germany and Spain.
