- ZeitschriftenartikelArchetypes of Digital Twins(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 64, No. 3, 2021) van der Valk, Hendrik; Haße, Hendrik; Möller, Frederik; Otto, BorisCurrently, Digital Twins receive considerable attention from practitioners and in research. A Digital Twin describes a concept that connects physical and virtual objects through a data linkage. However, Digital Twins are highly dependent on their individual use case, which leads to a plethora of Digital Twin configurations. Based on a thorough literature analysis and two interview series with experts from various electrical and mechanical engineering companies, this paper proposes a set of archetypes of Digital Twins for individual use cases. It delimits the Digital Twins from related concepts, e.g., Digital Threads. The paper delivers profound insights into the domain of Digital Twins and, thus, helps the reader to identify the different archetypical patterns.
- KonferenzbeitragData Spaces as the Distributed Communication Means for Industrial Automation and Control Systems(INFORMATIK 2023 - Designing Futures: Zukünfte gestalten, 2023) deMeer, JanA data space is more than just a repository for data. Even data is more than an item of data. However, in research a data space is not a new philosophy of communication. In this paper the concept of a data space shall be developed for its application in industrial automation and control systems (IACS). For this purpose, the existing reference architecture models, e.g. for I4.0 manufacturing or, electricity transportation and distribution but also for altruistic data dissemination in realms of smart infrastructures like cities, buildings, agriculture etc. Almost all examples of infrastructures shall be extended with something that is called in this paper a ‘fourth dimension’ in addition to the three regular dimensions comprising life cycle value streams, communication protocols and system component hierarchies. The fourth dimension of various reference architecture models can be represented by a combination of the two axes of the life cycle value stream of the system assets i.e., data, products, energy etc. with the axis of layered interoperability dealing with the representation of semantics in the given reference model. Thus, semantics means the state changes performed over time by the considered assets which requires the semantic interoperability between locations of a site or between device of a production chain. A state change issued by actors or processes during the life cycle value stream is an event that is represented in a data model and shall be accessible to other actors via the data space. Thus, the communicating actors or processes interconnected by the data space do not need the traditional layered communication protocols of the architectural models since they are interconnected through a distributed data space which plays the role of a distributed data repository to all actors and recipients of an application.
- ZeitschriftenartikelDigital twin technology – An approach for Industrie 4.0 vertical and horizontal lifecycle integration(it - Information Technology: Vol. 60, No. 3, 2018) Anderl, Reiner; Haag, Sebastian; Schützer, Klaus; Zancul, EduardoDigital Twin technology is increasingly gaining importance for digitizing industry. Even if digital twin technology still needs fundamental research, its significance for industry has become very visible, as digital twin technology is a key success factor to professionalize Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) applications. Industrie 4.0 as an initiative to increase industrial added value is based on establishing connectivity between CPS and to enable communication between CPS. The industrial application scenarios for Industrie 4.0 aim at vertical and horizontal lifecycle integration concepts where digital twin technology plays an important role. This contribution explains major concepts of Industrie 4.0 and derives the role of digital twin technology. Furthermore, digital twin approaches are presented and as well as the proposal to use the STEP-technology (Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data, ISO 10303) as a fundamental basis for a comprehensive digital twin technology.

- KonferenzbeitragDomain-agnostic Intelligent Digital Twins: Merging of Application-near Knowledge Representations with the Proactive Internet of Digital Twins (IoDT)(INFORMATIK 2023 - Designing Futures: Zukünfte gestalten, 2023) Lehmann, Joel; Lober, Andreas; Häußermann, Tim; Rache, Alessa; Baumgärtel, Hartwig; Reichwald, JulianFlexibility and reconfigurability regarding mass-customized products are the key premises of future industrialization. The amalgamation of Digital Twin (DT) approaches, knowledge-representing technologies, and skill-based engineering methodologies allow such approaches to emerge. This paper deals with the integration of knowledge representations as a driver for holistic system intelligence ranging from physical assets to the Internet of Digital Twins (IoDT) within the Digital Twin Reference Model (DTRM). This is what it takes to spur DTs to intelligence and proactive collaboration behaviors. Despite the domain-agnostic, universal applicability of the concept, exemplary implementation approaches from the field of production and intralogistics illustrate the feasibility. Specific domain knowledge can be dynamically aggregated and used as a basis for negotiation scenarios between DTs.
- KonferenzbeitragEnhancing Digital Shadows with Workflows(Modellierung 2022 Satellite Events, 2022) Heithoff, Malte; Michael, Judith; Rumpe, BerhardThe vast amount of data in modern manufacturing demands acquisition of contextualized data to enable fast decision making where domain expertise must be provided at run-time. Within this paper, we investigate the research question how to handle human-machine-interactions for engineering of digital shadows and still ensure the traceability of computation and simulation results. Current research for digital shadows concentrates on modeling key elements such as data sharing or metadata, but does not incorporate human-machine-interaction or the traceability of data aggregation. In this paper, we present a conceptual model which covers the base concepts for digital shadows integrating human-machine-interaction by utilizing workflows. We extend the conceptual digital shadow model defined within the “Internet of Production” excellence cluster and showcase our approach on an example. This contribution presents an applicable modeling approach for designing digital shadows which provide contextual information of the underlying human integrated process.
- KonferenzbeitragEnhancing Digital Twins for Production through Process Mining Techniques: A Literature Review(INFORMATIK 2023 - Designing Futures: Zukünfte gestalten, 2023) Schumacher, Marcel; Buschermöhle, Ralf; Haak, Liane; Höfinghoff, Max; Seipolt, Arne; Korn, Goy-HinrichA digital twin (DT) plays a vital role in the advancement of manufacturers towards Industry 4.0. However, the creation and maintenance of DTs can be time-consuming. One approach to streamline this process is the utilization of process mining (PM) methods and techniques, which can automatically generate valuable information for DTs. Therefore, this paper aims to examine different approaches that augment DTs with PM and explore their effects. The review categorizes these approaches into three groups: theoretical approaches, approaches with laboratory case studies, and approaches with real-world case studies conducted by manufacturers. The review reveals that the use of PM can enhance the flexibility and sustainability of DTs. However, this improvement comes at the cost of requiring high-quality data and more data preparation efforts.
- TextdokumentFrom Physical to Virtual: Leveraging Drone Imagery to Automate Photovoltaic System Maintenance(INFORMATIK 2021, 2021) Lowin, Maximilian; Kellner, Domenic; Kohl, Tobias; Mihale-Wilson, CristinaOptimizing the maintenance of large-scale infrastructure can be a significant cost driver for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This paper presents a feasible approach to combine data from real-world physical structures collected through an automated maintenance process with cloud-based AI services to generate a meaningful virtual representation of such structures. We use photovoltaic systems as an exemplary physical structure and thermal imaging, collected through scheduled drone monitoring. With help of these unstructured data sources, we demonstrate our approach's applicability. Our solution artifact provides a lightweight AI application that is adoptable for other problem spaces, enabling an easier knowledge transfer from research to SMEs. By combining Cloud Computing with Machine Learning, the artifact identifies present and emerging damages of physical objects. It provides a virtual representation of the object's state and empowers a meaningful visualization.
- KonferenzbeitragA Mixed Reality Application for Linked Data in Engineering and Production(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Schilling, Katrin; Stanetzky, Daniel; Brecher, ChristianDuring the engineering and production process, numerous data and models are generated. As Digital Twin they form a virtual representation of the physical objects with their different views and characteristics. The contents spread over various disciplines, stakeholders and life cycle phases; they form a huge space of linked data and resources. Visualizing this information space is challenging, especially as it is closely related to the physical process and the manufacturing environment. Interaction technologies such as Mixed Reality (MR) offer an alternative to the traditional screen-based systems, that are still common in automation technology. The presented demo shows a spatial interface for the MR glasses HoloLens to explore various data resources in the context of a manufacturing cell. The user can view and interact with the content (such as media, documents, live data, functionalities) as a spatial graph. He can see the real and the digital resources at the same time, interact with those objects and control the machine as well.
