The application is based on a flexible software framework that allows for the on-the-fly definition of event-to-action mappings. It provides means for integrating interaction events from multiple sources and thereby facilitates the rapid development and test of interaction concepts for multi-modal interactions.
- KonferenzbeitragCobity: A Plug-And-Play Toolbox to Deliver Haptics in Virtual Reality(Mensch und Computer 2022 - Tagungsband, 2022) Villa, Steeven; Mayer, SvenHaptics increase the presence in virtual reality applications. However, providing room-scale haptics is an open challenge. Cobots (robotic systems that are safe for human use) are a promising approach, requiring in-depth engineering skills. Control is done on a low abstraction level and requires complex procedures and implementations. In contrast, 3D tools such as Unity allow to quickly prototype a wide range of environments for which cobots could deliver haptic feedback. To overcome this disconnect, we present Cobity, an open-source plug-and-play solution to control the cobot using the virtual environment, enabling fast prototyping of a wide range of haptic experiences. We present a Unity plugin that allows controlling the cobot using the end-effector’s target pose (cartesian position and angles); the values are then converted into velocities and streamed to the cobot inverse kinematic solver using a specially designed C++ library. Our results show that Cobity enables rapid prototyping with high precision for haptics. We argue that Cobity simplifies the creation of a wide range of haptic feedback applications enabling designers and researchers in human-computer interaction without robotics experience to quickly prototype virtual reality experiences with haptic sensations. We highlight this potential by presenting four different showcases.

Darauf aufbauend wird auf aktuelle Entwicklungen im Bereich kooperativer Systeme mit Virtual Reality und Augmented Reality eingegangen. Es werden aktuelle Trends im Bereich der computer-gestützten Kommunikation und Kooperation mit KI-Systemen sowie der Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion beleuchtet. Dieses Tutorial wurde bereits mehrfach erfolgreich auf Mensch & Computer Tagungen und internationalen Tagungen angeboten und wird laufend aktualisiert.

We present three concept designs for maintenance and rescue robots for (sub)arctic use cases, where snow, cold and long distances create needs but also design challenges for robots. The concepts illustrate plausible use cases for outdoor robots in the north.

Insbesondere im Zusammenhang der Mensch-Technik-Interaktionsforschung werden Erkenntnisse der Ingenieurs‑, Kognitions- und Sozialwissenschaften interdisziplinär kombiniert und in nutzbringende Kontexte überführt. Der vorliegende Artikel betrachtet ausgewählte Themengebiete aus dem Forschungsgebiet Human-Computer-Interaction: Roboter und künstliche Intelligenz, Virtual und Augmented Reality sowie Datensicherheit im Hinblick auf IoT-Geräte. In den einzelnen Abschnitten wird ein Überblick über die Themengebiete gegeben und die aktuelle Forschung, sowie Herausforderungen für die Anwendung der Technologien betrachtet. Den verschiedenen Herausforderungen müssen Forscher dabei mit Interdisziplinarität und Praxisbezug begegnen. Transferring empirical findings from basic research into everyday life is one of the fundamental challenges of applied science. Especially in the research of human-technology interaction, findings from engineering, cognitive and social sciences are combined in an interdisciplinary way and transferred into useful contexts. This article gives an overview of selected topics from the domain of Human-Computer Interaction: Robots and Artificial Intelligence, Virtual and Augmented Reality as well as data security with regard to IoT devices. Latest research and challenges for the application of the technologies are considered in the corresponding sections. Researchers have to address the various challenges with interdisciplinarity and practical relevance.

A Situated Account of Computational Thinking as Problem-Solving in Two Danish Preschools(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 36, No. 1, 2022) Odgaard, Ane BjerreThis paper presents a case study of in situ activities in two Danish preschools. In the activities, learning computational thinking (CT) plays a central part. The participating 4- to 5-year-old children are invited by an external educator to employ tangibles, such as robots, for structured problem-solving tasks within an overall narrative framing. In accordance with elaborations on CT as a problem-solving strategy, it is examined how the children engage in CT as problem-solving. The activities are part of a municipal initiative that involves preschools in a larger Danish city. The aim of this municipal initiative is to support young children’s understanding of technologies, coding and robotics as an element of twenty-first century skills. Based on video observations, the study provides a situated account of how the children engage in problem-solving in the observed activities. In empirical terms, the study shows how problem-solving tasks, such as programming a robot to move from A to B, merge with complex endeavors of engaging meaningfully with things and people in social situations. These empirical findings are analyzed by employing theoretical conceptualizations of problem-solving from a sociocultural perspective. This leads to a critical discussion regarding the relevance, potentials and pitfalls of introducing CT through problem-solving tasks with tangible tools in Danish preschool settings.
