- KonferenzbeitragAdapting instructional hypermedia content to cognitive profiles(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Piombo, Christophe; Batatia, Hadj; Ayache, AlainMost existing web based distant education environments take into consideration the notion of student profile. Despite the significant variability of the content of such profiles, some common features are commonly encountered, such as initial level of knowledge, progress indicators, and learning objectives. Few systems consider cognitive aspects when modelling student profile. The objective of our work is to investigate this latter issue. We are currently developing a student model based on cognitive parameters that include learning styles, social factors, perception preferences, motivation factors, among others. The methodology adopted is to validate this profile through experimental study and to develop an adaptive hypermedia education system that automatically learns student profile and adapts learning materials accordingly. This papers presents an overview of the objectives and the methodology of this work.
- KonferenzbeitragAdapting Multinomial Dialog for the Elderly(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Müller, Christian; Wasinger, RainerIn this paper, we outline the design of a multimodal interface for a mobile pedestrian navigation system developed within the project COLLATE. The aim of the interface is to adapt to different resource limitations of the user. It takes into account the cognitive load of the user as well as the age. We present an approach on how special acoustic models for elderly speakers can improve speech recognition quality and at the same time provide an information source for user modeling. Three different presentation strategies are presented: unimodal (speech only, graphics only), redundant (speech and graphics providing the same information), and concurrent (minimally overlapped speech and graphics).
- KonferenzbeitragAdaptive Communication tools for mobile learning(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Laroussi, Mona; Rouillard, JoséThis paper presents work in progress an adaptive communication tools for mobile learning . We identify the benefits and the drawbacks of the mobile learning. We also define the communication in the educational process and how it can be enhanced by the use of PDA. Personalization and the adaptativity are presented. At the end a technical approach of our tool is given.
- KonferenzbeitragAn approach for Distributed User Models with the Focus on Transparency and Ownership of User Information(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Jedlitschka, Andreas
- KonferenzbeitragAn Ontology-Based Recommendation System for Elderly and Disabled Persons(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Zinnikus, Ingo; Bogdanovich, Anton; Schäfer, RalphIn this paper, we describe the use of a hierarchical ontology representation as a basis for modelling user preferences in the SAID project for elderly and disabled persons. The nodes of the ontology tree are associated with either pre-selected or dynamically found web sites relevant for each topic of the user s interest (in this way web-surfing can be substituted by browsing through the ontology). In order to further reduce the complexity of the tree, we combine this approach with applying a probability based recommendation system which monitors the user s actions and adapts itself according to the observed behaviour. We also show that the resulting ontology tree is compatible with Bayesian networks and discuss limitations and possible extensions.
- KonferenzbeitragAutomated System for Personal Learning and Control of Students Knowledge(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Joukova, Irina; Siplivaya, MarinaThis paper describes original technology for problems solving and basic principles of design of automated learning and knowledge control system. This system is created as open adaptive hyper media system with personalized access to educational repositories, navigation, learning strategy and control. Such system is a necessary fool for users, because it provides special educational tools for distance learning. It includes: definitions of learning aims; definitions of beginning user’s knowledge; choice of learning strategy; dynamic course materials and personal tests generation; projects development; consultations with teacher; common projects discussion; projects evaluation by teacher. System will make it possible to implement open mobile personalized learning with access to information resources.
- KonferenzbeitragImproving Structural Salience by Content Adaptation with Summaries(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Lippitsch, Stefan; Weibelzahl, Stephan; Weber, GerhardUsers have a better chance to comprehend a text the better its coherence and structural salience is. Presentation adaptation will be used to attain more support for link structure comprehension. We plan to examine the effectivity and efficiency of the user’s domain knowledge acquisiton. Therefore, assessment of both, internal (percent correct answers at tests) and external data (external tests, user satisfaction and goal attainment) is considered.
- KonferenzbeitragLayout Adaptation in a Portal for Personalised Cross-Plattform Content Packaging(10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Rist, Thomas; Kröner, Alexander; Brandmeier, PatrickThe background of this article is formed by work on IMAGEN, a toolset for the creation of Web portals that aim at providing their users with personalized content packages. After an overview of the system, we focus on the resolution of layout problems imposed by the content packaging approach. The core of the presented component for layout management applies constraint techniques for integrating layout preferences of authors, portal providers, and end users who receive the compiled content packages. Since IMAGEN aims at cross-platform delivery, we continue the discussion of our component with the question of how IMAGEN can be extended so that mobile access to personalized content packages becomes possible. Our discussion includes a description of experimental work conducted within the IMAGEN project. The focus of this work is on the customization of graphical representations for display on mobile devices with tiny screens. We have developed a module that uses techniques from the area of machine learning to chose from a set of available image transformations a transformation which most likely produces a reasonable result for a yet unseen image.
