    LISTEN: Contextualized Presentation for Audio-Augmented Environments

    The paper deals with the awareness of and the adaptation to the context in audio-augmented environments. Taking into account the relationship between aural and visual perceptions, we focus on the issues and the potential of adapting intelligent audio interfaces to augment the visual real environment. The description of the LISTEN project, a system for the creation of immersive audio-augmented environments, is taken as showcase; in particular, our focus is on the modelling and personalization methods affecting the audio design and presentation. The outcomes of the preliminary tests are reported in order to describe the is- sues and complexity of intelligent user model- ling in audio-augmented environments.

    Introducing ”Situational Statements” as an integrating Data Structure for User Modeling, Context-Awareness and Resource-Adaptive Computing

    Ubiquitous computing will have a unifying influence on user modeling, context-awareness and resource-adaptivity. The idea of this paper is to suggest a basic, semantically founded, uniform data structure that is simple but still expressive enough to cover all representational needs. An extended triple, which is based on RDF resources is introduced as well as an XML application for so called ”Situational Statements”.

    Kontextbezogene Informationsversorgung: Anwenderanforderungen und Granularität der Modellierung

    Informationsrecherchen werden von Mitarbeitern in einem konkreten Kontext durchgeführt. Der Beitrag untersucht anhand von fünf Unternehmen, welche Einflussfaktoren diesen Kontext bestimmen und welche Informationsquellen verwendet werden. Exemplarisch werden die Erfassungsmöglichkeiten des Einflussfaktors „Hilfsbereitschaft im Team“ sowie seine Auswirkungen auf die Informationsrecherche diskutiert. Abschließend wird für Recherche, Prozess, Rolle und Begriffe jeweils erörtert, welche Konsequenzen sich aus den Untersuchungsergebnissen für eine geeignete Granularität ihrer Modellierung ableiten lassen. Da in den Unternehmen viele Vorarbeiten nicht vorhanden sind, sollten Systeme zur Unterstützung der Informationsrecherche so aufgebaut sein, dass die Erfassung solcher kontextdefinierender Einflussfaktoren nicht zur Systemeinführung zwingend erforderlich ist, sondern sukzessive erfolgen kann.

    Implicit Feedback for User-Adaptive Systems by Analyzing the Users’ Speech

    This paper describes an approach to recognize the gender and age of a user on the basis of her/his speech. Within a two-level framework, machine learning techniques are applied to learn several appropriate classifiers whose results are combined on the top level to improve the overall classification of the user. As a part of the user model, the information about the user’s age and gender can be an important basis for appropriate adaptation decisions.

    Personalization Services for Adaptive Educational Hypermedia

    This paper proposes an architecture for providing personalization services for adaptive educational hypermedia. We formalize adaptation functionality in a re-usable way appropriate for the use in the semantic web. We show how to design personalization services that provide re-usable adaptation methods employing semantic web description formats.

    Learning for User Adaptive Systems: Likely Pitfalls and Daring Rescue

    Adaptive user interfaces adapt themselves to the user by reasoning about the user and refining their internal model of the user’s needs. In machine learning, artificial systems learn how to perform better through experience. By observing examples from a sample, the learning algorithm tries to in- duce a hypothesis which approximates the target function. It seems obvious, that ma- chine learning exactly offers what is desperately needed in intelligent adaptive behavior. But when trying to adapt by learning, one will sooner or later encounter one or more well–known problems, some of which have been discussed in [Webb et al., 2001]. We propose a framework for describing user modeling problems, identify several reasons for inherent noise and discuss few promising approaches which tackle these problems.

    Towards a new Role of Agent Technology in User Modelling

    This paper discusses resent attempts to employ multi-agent technologies for user modelling purposes. Based on the analysis of recent implemented systems, this contribution provides a general agent definition representing a flexible implementation to employ highly specialized entities for user modelling tasks, and illustrates communication and cooperation approaches. In the overall solution, agent teams cooperate to fulfil the requirements of user modelling in a more appropriate way.

    Revisitation Patterns and Disorientation

    The non-linear structure of web sites may cause users to become disorientated. In this paper we describe the results of a pilot study to find measures of user revisitation patterns that help in predicting disorientation.

    SPECTER: a User-Centered View on Ubiquitous Computing

    Although there still remain a lot of open questions on technical issues in ubiquitous computing, mobile system must not forget to put the user in the center of their interest. Context data must be presented in an intelligible way, all system behavior must support the user according to a model of her preferences and interests and privacy concerns should always be seen as a key issue. In this paper, we discuss various aspects of these topics on the basis of the SPECTER system, without raising a claim to completeness.
