    Limitations of Automatic Patent IR
    (Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2014) Jürgens, Julia J.; Womser-Hacker, Christa
In the last years, the interest of the IR-community in patent retrieval has risen. Various experiments have been undertaken and the problems of the field experienced in-depth. Results show that the paramount steps in the patent retrieval process are difficult to automate. This paper gives an overview over the methods that have been tested in the domain including their results and promotes a complementary, more interactive approach to patent retrieval. At last, promising areas for future research are described.

Collaborative Information Seeking in Professional Work-Settings: A Study of Equipment Utilization
    (Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2014) Böhm, Thilo; Klas, Claus-Peter; Hemmje, Matthias
In various work domains, the collaborative performance of a work-task by a team can lead to a shared information need required to fulfill this task. Many empirical studies identified collaborative information seeking and searching (IS&S) as everyday work patterns in order to solve a shared information need and to benefit from the diverse expertise and experience of the team members. This paper presents first empirical results in an ongoing research project: We report on a pilot user study that investigates the collaborative IS&S practices of three work groups in academic and industrial research facilities. The aim of the conducted pilot study was to capture the use of software technologies for realizing collaboration, information seeking and sharing in real-world work settings. We discuss resulting design implications as guideline for extending the ezDL (ezDL: Easy Access to Digital Libraries, www.ezdl.de) system towards supporting collaborative IS&S activities.

    Applying Geographic Information Retrieval
    (Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2014) Ahlers, Dirk
This article reports on the efforts to establish a research project on a geospatial search engine for the Latin American country of Honduras during the author’s research stay at a local university. Honduras is an interesting example of the challenges for information and knowledge management in developing countries as it combines many of the issues that are otherwise encountered more isolated or with less impact. These include low Web coverage in a low-resource country with limited Web infrastructure, and generally, work in challenging circumstances. The specific focus on geospatial information uncovers further issues that need to be addressed, such as informal addressing schemes or landmark-oriented location references, broad or incorrect locations for places, or insufficient ground truth in databases. While the tangible results of the project stay behind the original goals, several interesting results were achieved, which are condensed here as an experience report.

(Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2014) Päßler, Manfred; Nicola, Matthias

    (Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2014) Dittrich, Jens

Strategic Search Support on Macro and Micro Level
(Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 14, No. 1, 2014) Tacke, Andreas; Kriewel, Sascha
Consumers increasingly turn to online resources to get access to medical information. Despite their lack of procedural and domain knowledge, users often have complex information needs. Additionally, incomplete or inaccurate information can negatively affect medical decisions. Existing systems only partially address these problems. This work presents a prototypical implementation of a comprehensive support concept. It aims at giving users, in particular lay people searching for medical information, appropriate assistance on both the strategic and the tactical level while they are trying to solve complex search tasks. The article also describes a series of user experiments conducted as part of a master’s thesis and discusses their results.
