    Information need and IT demands for business process reengineering in operationroom management

    As the economic importance of operation room (OR) management is increasing, the aim of this paper is to analyse the information need for business process reengineering (BPR) in OR management and to reveal the need for corresponding IT support. The information on OR processes available in clinical standard documentation schemes proves fragmentary and insufficient for the needs of process analysis in BPR. Therefore a precise, detailed OR process model is analysed on relevant process interdependencies and influencing variables to reveal the crucial information need for OR management. The analysis includes empiric data, collected in a field study and shall form the basis for developing an adequately comprehensive documentation scheme. Its purpose is to uncover and pin-point where the need for information and respective IT support lead to an improvement of BPR for OR management.

    Information flow analysis based security checking of health service composition plans

    In this paper, we present an approach to solve the problem of provably secure execution of semantic web service composition plans. The integrated components of this approach include our OWL-S service matchmaker, OWLS- MX, the service composition planner, OWLS-XPlan, and the security checker module for formally verifying the compliance of the created composition plan to be executed with given data and service security policies using type-based information flow analysis. We demonstrate this approach by means of its application to a use case scenario of health service composition planning.

    Anonymity preserving authorization granting in medical information networks

    Due to the sensitivity of personal medical information, this paper addresses the need of hiding patient identities - in contrast to only keeping their medical data confidential. Thus, it is desirable that personal and meaningful patient identity information like names, addresses, personal identity numbers, etc., are not to be linked to disclosed electronic patient records (EPR). To achieve this, we propose a scheme that enables patients to anonymously grant medical teams authorization to access their EPRs without revealing their identities to the teams providing medical care. An essential benefit is that it enables patients to exert control over their own medical data. A security evaluation is included.

    Intermediation in the healthcare system: the example of Switzerland

    The paper analyzes the situation of intermediaries and their business models in the Swiss health system. Various intermediary roles are positioned within the value-added chain of the healthcare system. Particular attention is paid to cost-benefit relationships of intermediation for partners of the intermediary and for the intermediary itself. With regard to the connection between healthcare providers and health insurers, three intermediaries – namely the Trust Centers, Medidata, and H-Net – are featured in greater detail and studied in terms of differences of their business and revenue model.

    Process-based E-service-logistics for healthcare networks

    Coordination in healthcare networks becomes increasingly important to enable integrated care scenarios, to enhance patient satisfaction and to reduce costs of the treatment processes. A process-oriented approach for coordination in healthcare networks is introduced. It shows how interorganizational treatment processes can be supported by the concept of process-based e-service-logistics. The allocation of e-services is based on a model describing services and coordination tasks between roles in a healthcare network. The underlying systems architecture is presented. A solution for the (semi-) automated individualization of process-based e-service-logistics based on Case Based Reasoning (CBR) technology is discussed.

    Secure sharing of electronic patient records

    Sharing electronic patient records without compromising individual's privacy and confidentiality is a key challenge in adoption of distributed, electronic healthcare systems. To address this issue, it is necessary to ensure that a sender can trust the receiver and its environment to correctly implement its policy and vice versa, while sharing electronic patient records. This paper proposes an approach that can be used to establish a trust between two interacting parties based on trusted computing technologies, and describes its application and implementation in the context of distributed healthcare systems.

    Building flexible eHealth processes using business rules

    This article describes how business agility in a health insurance company can benefit from more flexible business processes. The suggested architecture for a flexible information system is service-oriented and uses a business rule management system to externalize rules. At the organizational level the business rule approach helps to identify and formalize rules.

    Using a data warehouse approach for mobile patients

    A large number of people already own a mobile phone. In the eHealth area, the usage of this mobile device is becoming more and more popular. Patients can install small applications on their devices that help or guide them in certain situations. Additionally, the mobile devices can be used to transmit all kind of physiological parameters electronically. These parameters are stored on a special server. By analyzing the data, patients can be alerted when the parameters are becoming bad. This paper presents the eSana framework that was developed as an integrated framework to connect patients to medical experts and enable the electronic transmission of physiological parameters. An important step is the analysis of these data. The focus of this paper is to show how eSana provides mechanisms for the automatic analysis of data by utilizing a data warehouse. The data warehouse model and possible analyses will be presented.

    Ontologies for knowledge modeling and creating user interface in the framework of telemedical portal

    The telemedical portal is an environment that provides a set of communication, storage and decision support services. The telemedical portal is designed to support diversified clinical problems, therefore it should be flexible and extensible. To provide the required flexibility we separated the domain specific knowledge from the generic services. The domain knowledge is represented by ontologies and knowledge bases that describe specific problems. Such separation allows the coupling of services with various knowledge bases. We present the overall architecture of the telemedical portal and use the teleconsultation service and the knowledge base describing the problem of multiple organ injuries to present the separation and coupling. Specifically, we show how the generic teleconsultation service stores information and automatically creates the user interface using the provided knowledge base.
