Zusammenfassung

Human Development Report (2008) named climate change as the defining human development issue of the XXI century. Adjacent to this problem comes to attention the difficulty of environmental sustainability quantification. The indices available for various aspects of environmental sustainability are broadly criticized and often difficult to interpret on a stand-alone basis. Current paper is an attempt to explore environmental sustainability taking into consideration two important governance indicators along with two widely used environmental indices, and disaster risk index. Based on results of principal components analysis, new indices were separated to potentially measure: (a) ecological performance and its potential provided governance restrictions and (b) natural disasters and impact of democracy on mitigation. Ranking of 139 countries based on a two-component scale has revealed that while the highest GDP countries comprised the majority of the highest performers, selected countries from Latin America, Europe and Africa with lower GDP also achieved good results. The research demonstrated that a variety of countries from different continents and income levels can potentially become ecological sustainability champions.
