Zusammenfassung

Ideally, methods for collecting environmental data should be inexpensive and easy. Technologies developed for the Internet of Things (IoT) could potentially help achieve that goal: Employing the IoT architecture, IoT devices (such as single board microcontrollers, sensors, and radio systems), and IoT software, all originally developed for the commercial market or the maker scene, seems to be a perfect fit for the environmental sciences. In this paper we investigate whether IoT technology lives up to its promise by implementing the technologies in a practical case of hydrological research for direct flow measurements and report about the pros and cons we experienced.
