Zusammenfassung
Currently, public environmental information systems (EIS) on the Internet provide all users with information free of charge. Costs for providing the information and reduced public budgets on the one hand, commercial use of these information through third parties on the other hand raise the question how far public authorities could charge for accessing information in public EIS. In this paper, we use the EIS of the state BadenWürttemberg, Germany, as an example to study the integration of electronic commerce functionality into a public EIS. Our study reveales that the technical integration is possible, but still changes of current organisational procedures are required to fully exploit the technical opportunities.
