Rapid urbanization in developing countries has brought forth both opportunities to new urban developments as well as challenges for ensuring quality of life and acceptable environmental conditions. Urbanization in Kampala has proceeded rapidly with the city extending and engulfing the hitherto rural areas and some formerly rural service centers or towns. As a major driver, urbanization-led land use and land cover change in Kampala metropolitan area has led to serious loss of arable land, degradation of ecosystems, environmental changes and social changes of the urban populations. This paper, attest to the environmental impacts of land use/cover change in the Kampala metropolitan area highlighting the challenges of urban planning to ensure environmental sustainability.de
