Zusammenfassung

Well calibrated rainfall runoff models of sufficient complexity are a necessary basis for accurate flood water simulations in order to prevent losses. Using the hydrologic modeling system ArcEGMO in a small catchment as an example, IaaS cloud computing has be proven fast and cost-efficient for short-term usage. On the other hand, IaaS cloud instances cannot replace local computers, since long-term usage is still expensive and the performance of the offered architectures can slow down a calibration process on the long run. Ultimately, cloud computing has the potential to be a useful extension of local computer capacities if state of the art computer hardware with a fair pricing is offered by IaaS providers.
