In this paper we discuss the conceptual issues in process modeling, and present various considerable modeling approaches in the context of BPM and SOC, including both semantic and non-semantic methods and referring to industrial standards and theoretical foundations. Furthermore, we provide an outlook to essential future study on process modeling, especially where semantic process modeling can play an important role in the real world business process applications.

Despite their important role there are little means to ensure the correctness of these processes and workflows as well as consistency between them. In contrast to other verification problems the semantics of business processes to be checked are less explicit and formalised. Nevertheless the processes and workflows have to be considered as highly complex and are consisting in most cases out of a very large number of sub- processes which are very hard to be overlooked manually. Means for ensuring the quality of business processes may be business rules and guidelines driven by experience and domain knowledge. Adequate models for static dependencies and dynamic behaviour and modelling tools help capturing the important semantics. Verification technology like model checking will support the quality assurance.

Improved flexibility is becoming a necessity in many competitive industries when companies are forced to quickly meet dynamic customer needs and when organization concepts are increasingly based on networking with partners. A key requirement for the flexible bundling of individual tasks in business processes are service models that have a clear link to how business is conducted and that are shared within a specific community. However, there is a lack of methodologies for combining technical and business-driven service modeling and aligning it with (business) process management as well as sourcing strategies. For this purpose, this research discusses techniques for service modeling and presents an extended service modeling concept for the business-driven discovery of services. The banking industry which currently is facing profound transformation challenges was chosen to motivate and demonstrate the applicability of the suggested model.

Services are generally regarded as interoperable building blocks for constructing, integrating, and merging applications. However, existing SOA based solutions often focus on solving technical integration problems while neglecting business-level capabilities which are most important for organizations. In this paper, we introduce the notion of capabilities as an important concept for business management. We identify major shortcomings of the existing service based solutions and outline a novel approach for capability oriented configu- ration and management that can react to the dynamically changing nature of business integration environments.

In particular, we address system and process integration challenges encountered in the real world, based on the example of the telecom domain: Internet-based telephony service (Voice over IP). Various aspects of ontology development are covered including relations to industry standards, ontology creation methodology and practice determined by telecom-specific aspects. Based on the use case example and the YATOSP framework, we ar-gue that the economical justification of the development of domain ontologies, due to their complexity and numerous dependencies, is not straightforward.

The most popular applications are voice calls and messaging. In contrast, business communication requires support for long- running interactions between people and automated systems. This makes the use of mobile device for business communication complicated with the existing user interface capabilities. Especially, in cases of mobile device centric processes, intuitive and effective mobile user interface is needed. A mobile business process is sub class of general business processes where user interaction is performed using mobile devices. In this paper, we will describe our experiences in enhancing the existing messaging platform and providing an intuitive way for users to access and interact with business processes. We will describe our approach and a proof-of-concept system with convenient and natural user interface that compares to the other common functionalities of the mobile device. The system consists of four parts: seamlessly integrated way to start new mobile business process instances, ways to check status of existing process instance execution, ways for notifying user on external events within a process, and ways on how users can react on these external events.
- KonferenzbeitragFlexibility Enhancements in BPM by applying Executable Product Models and Intelligent Agents(Business process and services computing – 1st international working conference on business process and services computing – BPSC 2007, 2007) Kress, Markus; Seese, DetlefIn this paper we present an alternative approach to model and execute business processes. The approach combines a compact model with an intelligent control flow mechanism. Instead of using a pre-designed process model that is executed dur- ing runtime by a workflow engine, we use a special model called executable product model (EPM) that is executed by a multi-agent system. The EPM provides a compact representation of the set of possible execution paths of a business process by defining information dependencies instead of the order of activities. In our approach the ap- plication of intelligent agents takes advantage of the flexibility provided by the EPM. Relational reinforcement learning (RRL) with a genetic algorithm (GA) is applied for managing the control flow. In experiments we show that business processes can be executed successfully with our approach and that the application of machine learning leads to significant performance gains.

The possible impact of these findings on the forthcoming implementation of BPSC models that deal with human activities is discussed.

Discussion of the human-centric process performance evaluation supported by the state-of-the-art presentation provides the motivation for our research work. Presentation of the hierarchical performance modelling architecture is followed by the detailed presentation of the component models representing respective performance evaluation perspectives.
