- KonferenzbeitragCost estimation for ontology development(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Paslaru Bontas Simperl, Elena; Mochol, MalgorzataTechniques for reliably estimating development efforts are a fundamental requirement for a wide-scale dissemination of ontologies in business contexts. In this paper we account for the similarities and differences between software and ontology engineering in order to establish the appropriateness of applying software cost models to ontologies. We propose a parametric approach to cost estimation for ontology development and analyze various cost factors implied in the ontology engineering process.
- KonferenzbeitragExpected utility of content blocks in web content extraction(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Kowalkiewicz, MarekIn this paper we discuss the possible application of new concepts in web content extraction: utility assessment, utility annealing, and dynamic aggregated document generation. After analysis of the state of the art in web content extraction, results of a survey study among Polish managers are presented. The discussion covers a web content extraction system with possible extensions that may help tackle the information overload problem. The discussed extensions go beyond current state of the art. Utility assessment considers economical view on value of information, while utility annealing allows for removing content blocks that cover information already acquired from other content blocks. Due to the existing content block extraction technology and new concepts proposed in the paper, it is possible to dynamically generate aggregated documents.
- KonferenzbeitragUsing business process models to retrieve information from governing documents(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Lægreid, Tarjei; Sandal, Paul Christian; Ingvaldsen, Jon Espen; Gulla, Jon AtleGoverning documents are long textual documents containing information about how different operations are to be carried out in a business. The information spans from overall policies and standards to detailed guidelines, and the amount of such documents in larger corporations tend to be substantial. In business process models the aim is to model the same domain from a process perspective. In this project work we investigate the potential of utilizing text mining technologies together with a standard information retrieval system to link these two sources of information in a dynamic way. To test out the concepts we employ business process models and governing documents from Statoil ASA, a Norwegian oil and gas company.
- KonferenzbeitragUser strategies in query formulations in the Internet library catalogue(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Choroś, Kazimierz; Kowalska, Justyna; Statkiewicz, IzydorThe Internet catalogue is a very easy and comfortable way of retrieving adequate literature and a practical technique for distance booking for interesting items in the library. The Main Library and Scientific Information Centre of the Wroc aw University of Technology has used the electronic catalogues since 1978 and since 1995 they have also been available in the Internet network. In this paper the transaction logs containing 623,875 queries collected over 7 years have been analysed, and then the user sessions have been recognized. The article also discusses two main user strategies: expansion strategy and contraction strategy in his behaviour and in the query refinement in the Internet library catalogues.
- KonferenzbeitragAutomated acquisition of semantic knowledge to improve efficiency of information retrieval systems(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Ceglarek, Dariusz; Rutkowski, WojciechThis paper presents the idea of incorporating semantic knowledge into information retrieval systems is presented. Semantic knowledge can be represented by structures such as thesauri or semantic networks. These structures are, however, very extensive and their manual construction is a complex and time-consuming task. That is why several methods allowing to acquire semantic relations in an automated way are being presented.
- KonferenzbeitragERP implementation effort estimation using data envelopment analysis(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Koch, StefanERP implementation projects have been encountered as very risky and complex, and frequently exhibit time and cost overruns. Therefore both a comparison of their efficiency, and especially an estimation of effort and costs associated with new projects are of high interest. Since ERP implementation differs from classical software development projects, as the main focus lies on adapting and customizing a complex system, and even changing the organisation, traditional models like COCOMO can not easily be applied. The non-parametric DEA on the other hand has been developed to compare the efficiency of units with multiple inputs and outputs with different measurement scales. In this paper, we will describe the application of DEA using a data set of 39 projects, drawing on the results of applying DEA for effort estimation of future projects.
- KonferenzbeitragTranslating XBRL into description logic. An approach using protégé, sesame & OWL(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Declerck, Thierry; Krieger, Hans-UlrichIn the context of the eTen project, WINS, a web-based business intelligence service to public and private financial institutions has been designed and implemented. One of the goals of the project was to provide new financial knowledge on companies from information gathered through interoperable information services. The services were implemented under the new emerging standard XBRL used for financial reporting. We sketch how relevant financial information was extracted from annual financial reportings. We also show at the same time the limitations we encountererd with the XBRL schema, due to the lack of reasoning support over XML-based data and information extracted from documents. To overcome these difficulties, we describe the “ontologization” of XBRL, which we assume to be a necessary requisite for large intelligent web-based financial information and decision support systems.
- KonferenzbeitragBusiness rules for compliant business process models(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Goedertier, Stijn; Vanthienen, JanThe value of business rules in business process modeling has been recognized by several authors: if the knowledge about implicitly present policies and regulations is made explicitly traceable as business rules we can enhance the flexibility of computer-supported business processes. Yet to date it is not fully clear how business rules can be used to model compliant business process models. In this paper, we show that deontic assignments can be used to formally model business protocols. Within the regulatory framework of a business protocol, participants have the autonomy to perform activities according to their own business policies. This can be modeled using reaction rules.
- KonferenzbeitragAssessing the state of the art of commercial tools for unstructured information exploitation(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Beer, Jan de; Kumar, Nishant; Moens, Marie-Francine; Vanthienen, JanThis paper provides a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in information retrieval and information extraction from text through a selection of commercial, market-leading tools. Rooted in a research project conducted for the Belgian Police, we give an overview of the main (desired) features provided or lacked by these tools, along with their measured quality in operation. Various shortcomings and suggestions for improvement will be formulated.
- KonferenzbeitragA review on XML document schemas and methods for schema design(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Jauhiainen, Eliisa; Honkaranta, AnneDue to wide-spread use of XML in applications and the future arrival of XML to the popular office software XML shall become the standard de facto for organizational documents. In order to realize novel, intelligent XML-based document applications organizations need to pay attention on schema desing. This paper reviews three differing schema languages and two potential methods for document-oriented schema design. The paper also exhorts that schema desing for document-oriented XML- documents requires differing methods than those applicable for data-oriented XML document type schema design.
