- KonferenzbeitragAdoption of the paperless environment by knowledge workers(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Miklas-Kalczyńska, MałgorzataThis work-in-progress paper focuses on the problem of the increasing use of paper documents by knowledge workers. The problem seems to exist despite the fact that many companies adopted technologies enabling the paperless environment. The paper identifies factors that influence the adoption of paperless environment by knowledge workers. It develops a new theory and proposes an experiment designed to verify this theory.
- KonferenzbeitragAgile maturity model approach to assessing and enhancing the quality of asset information in engineering asset management information systems(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Baskarada, Sasa; Gao, Jing; Koronios, AndyThis paper proposes a maturity model for assessing and enhancing the quality of asset information in engineering organisations. It is also intended to assist in the enhancement of the collection, storage and use of engineering asset information with the aim of enhancing the Information Quality (IQ) in order to improve organisational learning and decision making. Action research methodology is adopted to allow researchers to test and further refine this model with relevant Engineering Asset Management Organisations (EAMOs).
- KonferenzbeitragThe analysis of reporting tools for a cadastre information system(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Król, Dariusz; Oleksy, Jacek; Podyma, Małgorzata; Trawiński, BogdanThe process of selecting and implementing of reporting mechanisms for a cadastre information system is described in the paper from the point of view of system requirements. Many factors as user expectations, report usage, ability of report designing and modifying, possibility of presenting complex data in a readable way, costs and licensing as well as the performance and scalability required have been taken into account. Three versions of reporting mechanisms based on Crystal Reports, Microsoft Reporting Services and XML technology have been implemented and tested.
- KonferenzbeitragAn annotated corpus for development of modern cadastral information systems(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Piskorski, Jakub; Węcel, Krzysztof; Filipowska, Agata; Wieloch, KarolDevelopment of modern Cadastral Information Systems (CIS) requires deployment of tools for automatic estimation of real estates' value which is influenced by a number of factors. After differentiation of the factors, apropriate information on certain locations needs to be acquired. Since most up-to-date information is transmited mainly as free-text documents via online media, information extraction technology plays a key role in converting such data into valuable and structured knowledge, which faciliates automatic real-estate value estimation. This article reports on creation of a corpus of Polish free-text documents, tagged with name mentions of CIS-relevant entities, which constitutes a core resource for development and evaluation of information extraction components used within a cadastre framework.
- KonferenzbeitragAssessing the state of the art of commercial tools for unstructured information exploitation(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Beer, Jan de; Kumar, Nishant; Moens, Marie-Francine; Vanthienen, JanThis paper provides a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in information retrieval and information extraction from text through a selection of commercial, market-leading tools. Rooted in a research project conducted for the Belgian Police, we give an overview of the main (desired) features provided or lacked by these tools, along with their measured quality in operation. Various shortcomings and suggestions for improvement will be formulated.
- KonferenzbeitragAutomated acquisition of semantic knowledge to improve efficiency of information retrieval systems(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Ceglarek, Dariusz; Rutkowski, WojciechThis paper presents the idea of incorporating semantic knowledge into information retrieval systems is presented. Semantic knowledge can be represented by structures such as thesauri or semantic networks. These structures are, however, very extensive and their manual construction is a complex and time-consuming task. That is why several methods allowing to acquire semantic relations in an automated way are being presented.
- KonferenzbeitragBusiness rules for compliant business process models(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Goedertier, Stijn; Vanthienen, JanThe value of business rules in business process modeling has been recognized by several authors: if the knowledge about implicitly present policies and regulations is made explicitly traceable as business rules we can enhance the flexibility of computer-supported business processes. Yet to date it is not fully clear how business rules can be used to model compliant business process models. In this paper, we show that deontic assignments can be used to formally model business protocols. Within the regulatory framework of a business protocol, participants have the autonomy to perform activities according to their own business policies. This can be modeled using reaction rules.
- KonferenzbeitragChallenges in IS evolution benefit assessment(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Kankaanpää, Irja; Koskinen, Jussi; Tilus, Tero; Sivula, Henna; Lintinen, Heikki; Ahonen, Jarmo J.In this paper, the challenges of information system evolution benefit assessment are reviewed. Classical investment criteria and their advantages and disadvantages with respect to evolution options assessment are studied. The following potential challenges in evolution investment decision making were identified: selecting a proper analysis method, acquisition of suitable metrics and follow-up data, and valuation of the results. A preliminary framework, ISEBA, was developed to address these challenges.
- KonferenzbeitragComplexity metrics for business process models(Business Information Systems – 9th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2006), 2006) Gruhn, Volker; Laue, RalfBusiness process models, often modelled using graphical languages like UML, serve as a base for communication between the stakeholders in the software development process. To fulfill this purpose, they should be easy to understand and easy to maintain. For this reason, it is useful to have measures that can give us some information about understandability and maintainability of a business process model. Such measures should tell us whether the model has an appropriate size, is clearly structured, easy to comprehend and partitioned into modules in a sensible way. This paper discusses how existing research results on the complexity of software can be extended in order to analyze the complexity of business process models.
